El Nino 90-91 did not help matters. The beach break was severely altered starting with El Nino 1983. Seasonally the currents would take the sand off
the beach starting in early fall and deposit them just offshore then by Memorial Day it would all return. In Jan-Feb '83 we had three huge storms back
to back to back that caused a portion of the cliffs at north end of camp to fall in along with 8-9 houses. Also all the sand that was offshore was
sent 'downstream' and the beach at La Fonda/La Mision was the benefactor partly. The result was that the beach break became less consistent and only
worked with a BIG south or a HUGE west, some of both I was lucky to enjoy. In the mean time there has always been a nice right hand point break and a
middle reef break. It has only been in the last 5-6 years that the sand has returned in quantities sufficient to allow for some nice peaks with the
right swell at the beach break. Putting in the days is correcto, I have had the good fortune over these last four decades to get my share. Growing up
my family would head down the day after school was out and come home the day after Labor Day and we spent virtually every holiday down there as well.
I grew up surfing with my dad and mom and spent MANY a day surfing the place all by myself wondering how my buddies back at the HB pier were fairing
with the crowds and wishing they were around to share the stoke.   The place will always be special even without surf and when the swell and
tide line up it is hard to beat. I have been very fortunate all these years.

i first laid eyes on the Campo back in 1978-9 with Jerry and Marty driving and pushing me into waves i had no reason to be digging for. i was the kid
who had gas money and the boys knew where we could find an empty wave and a torta, esta bien?
to be in 9th grade again and know what i didn't know then.............

no. jimmy vaughn's dad (juez susio) was a superior court judge who had a house on the north side of the la mision river under the mushroom water
tower. we'd leave after work/school on friday (told mom i'd spend the night at Skeeter's and go downstream Sunset Cliffs and not be home until late
Saturday) back when this kind of thing was okay!
there are a few girls who still get wet looking at the tower i made them climb and look out over the coast, ditching school and imbibing,
inhaling..... but i digress!

Anacleto riding his horse thru camp sidearm in the holster with a buzz on barely staying upright in the saddle what a sight. We would often visit the
campers on the bluff and 'warn' them not to mess with the camp 'host' who would be coming to collect his 'fees' on horseback.
Regular foot earned my backside stripes on that left. When I was 17 Easter weekend BIG south I almost drowned when a double overhead wave lip crashed
square on my head squashed me onto my board after my back foot slid off the end of the board doing the splits tore my left hamstring sucked me over
the falls drug me across the bottom snapped my leash and let me up just in time for the next wave to smash me down again. I drug myself up on the
shore way up by the old 'pier' and puked my guts out from all the water I sucked down and from being scared s*^tless. To this day my hamstring gives
me problems if I overextend. Lesson learned - mother nature bats last and it's stupid to surf alone when it's big, or anytime for that matter.
