An olive branch, DENNIS.

An Open Letter to DENNIS

Doug: Please let this thread stand for at least a few days before moving it to Off-Topic, where it surely belongs. I need to clear the air publicly between Dennis and me in a manner for all to see.

DENNIS
Our recent late-night exchange had some fellow Nomads wondering what is going on between the two of us. To tell the truth, I don't really know myself. Perhaps you'd care to enlighten us?

When I first joined the board a little over two years ago (after several years of lurking), you welcomed me as you do all new members. I sent you a couple of U2Us early on to ask your opinion on some things. Among them was a question of your take on Skeet. You told me he was like a crazy uncle the family kept locked up in the attic, that he was harmless and that it was best to just ignore him. You were cordial.

Perhaps it is because you sit on the same side of the political fence as does Skeet that you find his frequently-offensive remarks nothing more than amusing. But as a card-carrying, angry progressive, I was unable to view him the way you did (you have since disowned him).

When I responded to one of Skeet's rants with a joking "I think yer nothin' but a yella' bellied coward" (I thought, doing my best John Wayne imitation), you absolutely wigged out on me. You even started a thread with the expressed goal of driving me from the Nomad board for having dared to hold Skeet to account, a thread that Doug quickly erased through no action on my part. I'm sure you must have received a "friendly reminder" of the Nomad rules of etiquette, for you behaved yourself for a while.

Since that encounter, we have had periods of relative calm. But often, out of nowhere, you suddenly give me a couple of broadsides. One such occasion was triggered when I merely pointed out that the Halloween customs practiced in La Paz were different from those you mentioned in your area. At no point did I say "No, no, no, Dennis, you are SOOO wrong, that isn't the way it is, etc." Yet, judging from your response, that was how my comment was received by you. Another time, your attack amounted to the old smear on all US Navy sailors, that we're gay. It's been downhill from there.

I've tried dealing with these outbursts in different fashions. At first, I tried to disarm them with humor. Some times it worked, more often, not. Then I tried ignoring your insults. Given your need for attention (which you will undoubtedly deny), that was worse. These attacks ended only after some fellow member reported the violation of the rules (I've only reported you once, that I remember, but you could check with Doug on that).

The other night, on "the medical thread" as one member put it, you finally found out how far you have to push before getting in touch with my bad side--it only took two years to find out. I sent you a private U2U, offering a resolution to "our" problem (remember, my mother Bajalera and my daughter Bajalerita also browse the Nomad board). I suppose some could have taken it as a threat; Doug was one of them.

You, of course, went public with my message, as you are wont to do. But seriously, as I said, I'm a progressive, and we all know that the more progressive, the more of a sissy we tend to be (and I'm way, way left). Besides, as I would never leave my darling daughter at a mall in your neck of the woods as you suggested (we all know how dangerous the border region is!), she will be riding shotgun wherever I go on this upcoming trip. The only thing worse than seeing your Dad beat up some decrepit old man is seeing some decrepit old man kicking the crap out of your Dad. In other words, a fight would have been a lose-lose situation for me. No Dennis, actually, the plan was to win you over with my charm. I can't think of a single Nomad I've met who thinks I'm the #1 a-hole on the board, as you anointed me the other night (seriously, Dennis, I've never been #1 at anything). Even my ex-wife only has me catalogued as a JEEERRRKKK!!!, and she knows me well. I'm sure that if you got to know me, you'd change your opinion a bit.

So that is where we stand today, only this time I, too, got a warning. But, given your status as Doug's most sacred bovine, your position on the Nomad board is far safer than mine. But that is as it should be. You have made countless valuable contributions to the board, and the total number of posts you've logged speaks for itself. I'm just looking for a solution that works for both of us. You aren't doing yourself any favors by these senseless attacks, as was demonstrated by a couple of posters after our last encounter. You are your own worse enemy when it comes to the disrespect you sense. Besides, I can be a great friend, should you need any. Do you really want the likes of Roberto/Jenny Navarrette/Fulano to be your principle defenders? I know you're a better man than that.

I'm not offering an apology, nor am I asking for one. What I'm asking for are the keys to get out of your dog house. I think I've earned that in the last two years, taking your best shots and still remaining civil. The fact that I just now got my first warning from Doug is a testament to that.

How do I get a pass from you?

Steve

Well, Steve....I appreciate your blend of scolding and decency. You mix it well. Your transition from Switch to Olive Branch is well received. Thank you for that.
You need no pass from me. I ain't nobody and this is no place to be drawing lines in the sand. I hope that this is all behind us and forgotten....as it should be.

One note of clarification, if I may.....I took it public because, as I said the other night, you have blocked my U2Us and I thought it rude to ignore your offer.

Let's just move on, Steve. Life's too short.

One more thing before I go.....Do you keep a diary?

All in fun, Steve. Thanks for the note.

Technically, I was only referencing the first, so no, Skeet, you're still down for only one "yella bellied coward," from me, at least.

Skeet no one on this board would ever think you are a "yellow bellied coward" unless they are totally stupid.

How about if someone OTHER than you quoted your reference of a quote that you quoted?

Would that count?

Thanks, Dennis. Glad to get it behind us. But, I swear to gawd I didn't block any U2Us. My daughter can attest that I'm much too inept on a computer for such things.

Sure, and a Bajatripper baptism, too!

I am trying to learn to play the didgeridoo, however!

I love you Skeet.

Let's all hold hands and .....

Using a compass, one of the pyramid's diagonal lines must be aligned due north; that is, the four corner points are directed toward the four cardinal points of the compass, namely North, South, East and West. When meditating as a group (two or more persons), we recommend that someone be designated beforehand who signals the beginning and the end of the peace meditation.

Here here, I do believe it's clear that there was a joke or sarcasm pointed toward the character/writer known as Skeet, though if we perceive an underlying criticism in the joke wouldn't it be about the character's posited ego, or projection of his own ego as superior to others--therefore justifying a lie for his bnefit. And isn't that itself a philosophical question reaching to the heart of being, or religion, or architecture of ones life, do we as individuals support each other, even those less fortunate, or do we profit on the backs of others. Isn't the underlying joke one about values, or more plainly stated does a character help others for the sheer joy helping others or do they attempt to exploit and profit off of others as a life modus operandi? What is the true character or spirit of a yellow belly liar? In a religious sense, does he/she believe in Luciferianism or pure ego, or does he/she share real community values and morals? What is the intent? These are questions to answer in Baja...

Well, I may be reading between the lines, Nomads often do.

while we're clearing the air, i'd like to say Dennis is a man among men. Bajatripper is too, seeing how he laid it all out....

if i offended anyone here i prolly meant every word. after re-turning over the same leaf i feel bad for some of my behavior and wish only the best to most of my fellow Nomadic Ones.

Bajatripper - sleep easy, amigo! i wish i had your ability to pull a bandaid off a scab like you just did.....
