WHALE JUMPING

did anyone else see the whale jumping way out of the water today, very close to shore ?

I did not see it jump, only puffing out water vapor and thrashing it's tail around. Seems to me like a weird time to be around our coastline.

one of the fishermen saw it while out today and said it was alone in the water. If you saw it - what kind of whale is it ? Is it migrating or lost ?

Whale jumping sounds like something from The Biggest Looooooser:lol:

humpback whales do feed in this area when there are lots of baitfish. We often see them while fishing at San Pablo. Humbacks are easier to identify than other whales because they breach more, tail slap...which may be what you saw Blance and they have long white pectoral fins. Enjoy the dance.

I saw the same thing happening off the coast of Punta Santo Tomas in BCN last week. They also had the long white pectoral fins. Didn't realize humpbacks would be in these northern baja waters. What a show!

humbacks even visit Canada! One neat thing about this species is that they "vacation" in different areas..most whales have a set migration route but Humpbacks will visit different places like Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada....would be interesting to know why they choose where they go...probably food driven but it sure seems like they just like variety.

Back in the day Pompano would have posted his " Thar She Blows!" in the swimming pool. But, alas, those days are behind us.

The devil made me do it! No rum involved..

I'm still Way Up North....but not as far as I was...and now that I have good access to the Internet and Nomads, I will get busy and write some hopefull-not-too-boring Non-Baja Reports to fill a big time gap since I last visited here.

Excuse the highjack, BajaBlanca....but I did actually see whales up here...over at the estuary of Churchill, MB, Canada ...white Belugas in Hudson Bay...but my report will have to do with floods, fish, and fun.

Hasta pronto!

edit to say hey to shari...eh?
