A Thelonious day

Way back in 1969, while going thru the stacks of new LPs at my local record store, in Bakersfield no less, I come across an album by Mr Monk. I never heard of the guy but thought the album cover looked interesting and wanted something a little different than the usual crap I was buying.
I was not then, nor am I now, a Jazz listener; but I must admit, Mr Monk is on my playlist. Nice surprise to see that North Coast Brewery has an Abbey ale in his name. I recommend it highly for cold winter's afternoon.

I had one of those bottles two days ago and will second your recommendation. I'd picked up one of his albums in the mid 70's for about the same reasons as you. My son, who leans toward heavy metal, now has the album and enjoys it.

Not much into Theloneous Monk, but FELONEOUS MONK is on You Tube. The first one was great. Stop it B! Now he's famous.

Oh, enter at your own risk. Contains opinion and street language.

Thelonious Monk. One of the Jazz greats. Pianist - composer. Unlike Keith "Keef" Richards, probably knows the difference between a harmonic minor and a pentatonic minor scale. Might even know Dorian from Aeolian from Phrygian modes.:lol:

Right, Dave? You play any of his stuff?

I'm sure it is. You should read Clapton's book. Amazingly open and honest about just what a flockup he's been most of his life.

Improvisation jazz was never everyone's cup of tea. Back in the day, mainstream music appealed to folks who appreciated a certain predictable chord pattern.

Just have to think that with hip hop and rap today, that improvisational jazz ought to have greater appeal to the younger generation.

And, that 9.4% alcohol content probably eclipses the taste!:lol:

Santiago,
I'm a jazz fan and enjoy Monk. Thanks for the intro to this ale. Will have to find it on my next trip to the states.

Anyone know where to find it in San Diego?

Nice granite and cabinets, btw.

Just introduced to St. Feuillien Triple this weekend. Highly recommend it.

All of it.

Always been curious as to how a sharecropper's grandson could wind up with a name like that. I guess his son could answer that question...or, maybe not. Monk was a very strange breed. Some of his best friends tell stories about how Monk spoke no more that a few sentences of conversation, ever. And these were folks who knew him for decades.

Yeah, he's awesome, a breed unto himself - as geniuses tend to be.

I would really love to hear you play, Dave? I have a strong feeling it would be a great experience. If you ever play in public, would you please let me know?

Larger Vons stores, BevMo, fairly easy to find. And at 9.4% you only need one - OK, two - bottles . . .

Monk was one of the giants and even after "making it big" you could still find his name/number in the New York City phone book...I remember hearing that and didn't believe it until I went to NYC in the 70's and found a phone booth and sure enough, there it was. (thinking back, why didn't I just google it!!!??).
