tax on taking lumber down
Hello and thanks for letting me join this forum.
I want to take some lumber down to build a small patio off my trailer. Does anyone know how bad i will get taxed when i take it over the line?

The first question is, can you take it down? If yes, then what are the import fees? The rules have changed in the past couple/few years.
I hope we can find out what they are. I'm interested in the answer also.

The rules for bringing in building materials have become very restrictive and will be subject to 17% [+- depending on the day] import tax.
You didn't mention the quantity you want to import, but if you bring in over 1000 dollars worth of merchandise, you'll have to formally import it.
Lots of variables.
Another thing....where are you building? Home Depot is here now and in many cases it will pay for you to pay the price premium and avoid the
transporting and tax.

Ditto on what Dennis says....
It is easiest to just buy it down there and avoid the hassles. I have heard of "fumigation permits" and other hassles related to importing lumber. We
have always bought it down there at Home Depot or Los Flemates in Maneadero. You can call Los Flemates ahead of time and place your order and they
will have it ready and waiting for you. I posted their phone number on here before - do a search for Los Flemates....

That, unfortunatly, has never worked for me in the past. I've always had better luck picking my own lumber.
Anyway, Flemate is convenient if you're in that neighborhood.

we have purchased lumber from a good mill in Ensenada called Los Olivios
(646-176-8086)...you can choose your lumber there too...it is VERY reasonably priced compared to home depot and other places. It may be cheaper to do
it that way and much less complicated.

Excellent choice...especially for large stuff....gluelams etc.
The reason I mention Home Depot is they carry Douglas Fir. Not sure Los Olivos does since they didn't in the past.

The only reason i was even considering it is that i am getting the lumber for free up here. So its used lumber out of a tear down house. So i guess
the trick is to get them to value the lumber as cheep as as i can and then its 17%..........
The hassle part is not a big deal as i have been hunting in mex for 30 years 
more worried about getting a 300$ tax on used lumber i got for free.

Value it for what you think is fair. You can always return to the U.S. if their valuation is significantly higher.
