Let's remember that as far as I know, the military does not make you step away from your vehicle. They only ask you if they can search it, which usually requires folks to exit the vehicle. So, y'all have lotsa opportunity to watch what is happening.

Last couple of years, I've made the trip with two adult females, who instinctively engage the soldiers in the area, allowing me to stand close to the vehicle and watch every move.

That is exactly right. There is no way to hide everything that someone might find "valuable" at the time. Just keep a eye on things as best you can and try not to let the little things drag you down.
