Buying an appliance in N.Baja
Like a refrigerator or something. So would you buy that at Costco, Walmart, or Home Depot? Or buy in the USA and pay the duty? Or buy a used one
somewhere?

My dos centavos--- Just get the most energy efficient model at the best price. I've got three refers running in my house. One from CostCo (Chula
Vista), a chest freezer from Lowe's (Chula Vista) and one from Coppel (Rosarito). Only fools use the "declare line" live a little! If you do buy
stateside ask Nomads for some helpful tips and tricks to get them across duty-free.

we have 2 fridgs...
we bought a mex fridg at costco...
works ok..but things that an american one has it doesnt ...
like a self closing door
uses 126w when running
its stailness...hard to clean
we bought a fridg in usa...uses 180w when running
has that bumpy metal....easy to clean
and a door ice dispenser...impt for summer
our little fridges for the units are the apt kind...
they use 80w
i bought at walmart
1/2 price in usa...
even with import fees...still saved money
stove from santa rosalia...its propane
no oven temp sensor
just low med high
you NEED to watch the temp when cooking
and you need to push an igniter to light
i'd get a stove in the usa and buy a propane conversion kit up there
its alot of parts but not too bad
our dryer conversion was way easier
edit....if you bring it from the usa...import it
dont listen to these "no name people"

If all the options were open to me, I'd buy a good used one in the states. They're all over the place up there.

If you are in need of refrigeration with small energy consumption, as on a solar system, the absolute best performance per dollar is a Sundanzer
fridge. They burn about .3 amp (yes dot 3!). They are chest fridges and freezers so the cold doesn't fall out when you open the door and they have
the same thick insulation that you find in a SunFrost costing about 3 times as much. They come in BOTH DC and AC models. We bought ours from
TheSolarBiz.com and they shipped it to us in San Diego and we imported it paying the duty. Fridge + shipping was about $1100 and the duty was not
bad...lower with an FM3. I don't remember the number.

We have found friges are more expencive here /Mexicali than stoves. Stoves seem to be quite a lot less. The LG frig /electric seems to be the least
energy user & the best price in Friges. We have an LG & a Sunfrost in our casa. A Bosh stove we bought in Mexicali at Cocina Economico. We
looked at several stoves at both El Centro Home depot & Mexicali. Mexicali Home Depot cheaper.

I would buy local, Home Depot and stores of that caliber sell the same product they sell in U.S. the ones you see on display are usually the lower
end, but the can order what you want if its not on display. yes the price looks higher but if you factor in the import tax it works out.
I always shop at the scratch and dent store and get new at 50% off or more and they usually have a 6mos warranty. For instance I bought a Samsung
French Door Stainless steel Refigerator for 800 dls in the stater it retailed for 1,800

If you do buy North of border: There is no shame in Mexico. No one will even look at you sideways for trying. There is no penalty for getting a red
light and then being sent to secondary inspection, even if you have goods you should have used the "declare" lane for. You're in Mexico, act like a
Mexican and try to get away with it. Embrace the culture.

Dude, buy nearly new at Machado's. They'll give you a guarantee and will stand by it.
South of town sorta across the street from Tacos Jr's.

Dave-- that`s where I bought my last one, they delivered and reversed the door for another $10!
Whooosh.. I know what you`re saying. I drive a van and ALWAYS have to go to secondary crossing south. BTW I was talking to a Home Depot guy in
Encinitas and he said he went down to the Chula Vista location and was shocked when he saw all the empty appliance boxes in the parking lot! Now I
wonder why so many items were opened and the boxes left there!

There ya go. Throw a couple of unwrapped BigMacs inside and a handful of dirt on the outside and save yourself a fifty dollar bill.

For not using the correct line? Seriously? Have you ever tried to cross the seven southbound lanes to get to the Declare lane? We're not talking a
house move here, we are talking one "open-box" appliance.

Capuchino Appliance Repair in Rosarito
We have been customers for over ten years; buying/replacing stove, refrigerators, trash compactor, dish washer and washer/dryer.
He goes to the maquilas for scratch/dent items under guarantee or, if you want, he sells reconditioned appliances (the reconditioned refrigerator in
the garage has been working smoothly for six years).
He delivers, sets up and hauls away any dead appliances.
We were looking for a new stove last year and he found a top-of-line GE Profile for hundreds less than at Sears.

That's a good tip Jan. We have found the local repairmen can bring almost any appliance (and TV) back to life and with a 30 day guarantee. They have
recharged our refers freon (no pesky environmental concerns) and replaced bad parts for less than a service call alone would be stateside. For sure
when my Maytag gas dryer goes out (soon) I'll look to the roadside places in Rosarito first who have almost new ones.
