BAJA SPELL CHECKER... Why?

For fun, learning and respect for the places we love to visit...

How long would you let a friend spell Phoenix like this: Feenicks? How about Dallas: Daliss? Or perhaps Springfield as Sprinfeld? Friends don't let friends mis-spell Baja places!:saint:

Well, when you mis spell Baja places it looks just as bad to someone from those places... For example... There is no such place as Guerro Negro or Los Barilles or Puertocitos or Alphonsina's or Loretto or Muleje... YET, we usually (as English speakers) know what is meant. A letter may not get there or a search on the Internet may not find it, when mis-spelled.

Some samples...

Here is the CORRECT (and): Incorrect spelling

BAJA: Baha :light:

TIJUANA: Tiajuana

TECATE: TKT

ALGODONES: ???

ROSARITO: Rosarita (Yes, it is really Playas de Rosarito)

ENSENADA: Encinada, Ensinada

SANTO TOMAS: Santo Thomas

SAN FELIPE: San Felipi, San Felippi

SAN QUINTIN: San Quentin, San Quinten

PUERTECITOS: Puertocitos (one of the most often misspelled places in Baja)

SANTA YNEZ (or INES)*: Santa Ynes, Santa Inez
(The owner prefers 'Ynez', but maps and road signs maintain that it is 'Ines'... The last straw on insisting it is 'Ynez' is when I bought a shirt from Matilda there, spelled 'Ines'!)

ALFONSINA'S: Alphonsina's

LAGUNA CHAPALA: Laguna Chapalla

SANTA ROSALILLITA: Santa Rosaliita

SAN FRANCISQUITO: San Fran&%$#@?

GUERRERO NEGRO: Guerro Negro (the next most often misspelled place in Baja)

MALARRIMO: Mallarimo, Mallarrimo

VIZCAINO: Viscaino

BAHIA ASUNCION: Bahia Asencion

MULEGE: Muleje

LORETO: Loretto

LOS BARRILES: Los Barilles

Sometimes, the locals will change a spelling from an original name... as in COLONET (Colnett) or SANTA CATARINA (Santa Catalina)...

Anyway, please don't take my Baja spell helping as anything more than trying to help... if not for you, then for the countless others reading Nomad for information!

Thank you!

David

I agree, but your English spelling, as has been pointed out before, is atrocious. Don't you think you aught to start there before criticizing others for their Spanish spelling.

Y yo que siempre había creído que se dirigía a Bizcaino para hacer compras y pasar tal vez por la Cachanilla para visitar a amigos. Usted sabe Cachanilla, ¿correcto? Algunas personas locales no lo llaman Santa Rosalía.

For those of us who work with Macs, we can chose the spell checker or checkers by designating multiple keyboards...and yes, the spell checker also works within BAJANOMAD.;D:yes:

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rarely ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect in it’s weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

The English language is butchered around here --- and I know I am quite guilty of same. So often we read over there when their or they're would be correct, or it's which is not the possessive form of it, but is a contraction of it is. Or mis spell is really misspell and so often right is used instead of correct. So what? Does it matter?

Sorry David, but it just seems so petty everytime----opps, that is every time you feel compelled to correct someone. Is it really a matter of respect? I don't think so----opps, at one time Ferna requested that we do not use English contractions as they are difficult for Spanish speakers.

In addition, names like Tiajuana were common in times past. Baha is often used by some Europeans. In Vizcaino, one can find signs that spell it Viscaino. Is the language español or castellano---the prefered name in many countries.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

In defense of David K, I've had many debates with people calling Santa Rosalia - Santa Rosalillita, especially surfers. They say "there isn't surf in Santa Rosalia" when i said the correct pronunciation - Santa Rosalillita - and I say check your spelling. Usually it's dudes who've been to Baja once or twice and don't know where the hell they are.

Having said that, people make mistakes - we all do - I do. Spelling is just us, a basic chimp, on a keyboard, trying to write what we think. We make mistakes. I say forget about it! Go experience the world and Baja! And generally there IS NO SURF at Santa Rosalillita! I've never surfed it bigger than 6 inches.

Oh.....and just to muddy the waters more, I couldn't give a crap if someone spells a Baja town wrong. People do it all the time on here, I probably have, and oh well.......we are all learning.

The more experience you have in a town or region, the more accurate you will get. Ask a Mexican who came to Carlsbad to spell Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, Chicago, or Rhode Island. They'll probably get it wrong, and oh well.....it's a language thing and it's in our brain wiring.

Oh good lord I'm going to have to run down to Cachanilla and tell them they've been doing it all wrong for a hundred years! Adding doble eles in place of the dipthong ia has been going on for I have no idea long in the Spanish language. Try dealing with the letter X instead of jota, and an endless number of other variances, many due to Nuhuatl infusion into the language. For centuries a Mexican would have thought you crazy to call a turkey a pavo. The word pavo caught on in Bajas Californias, but replacing guajolote took until just recently on the mainland. Many now refer to a barnyard turkey as pavo and free range turkey as guajolote. Being from Arizona, you must be familar with I-19. One of the cross highways is named Palo Parado. A good slang term for hard-0n. On I-5 in California are two highways named Panocha or Panoche. A word you do not want to use in Mixed Company in Mexico.

BTW: Seemingly a thousand zonas urbanos in Mexico have been nick-named Cachanilla or cachania. If you make a spelling error the locals are very forgiving. The cachanilla I was referring to is Sta Rosalia BCS.
