Anbody know for sure?

It's 3 blocks behind Bodega Aurrea, at the North end of town, on the inland/East side of Hwy #1.

Thanks.

Maybe I was going the other way when I passed by it (by accident) a few years ago ......

If anybody decides to actually follow the cop to the station, it would be good to know if you were actually going in the right direction or just being led aound.

Spent the day in Cd C banking, groceries, and buying tires and drove from one end of town to the other on the main service/side roads that parallel Hwy 1. Saw a couple of Fed Caminos on the Hwy but only saw one municipal police truck and we had no problems.

Nice!

We passed through around noon on Sunday. Saw a couple of police pickups but no problems. We drove the speed limit and made all the required stops (even though those around us didn't).

Termino de Tramo
Inicio de Tramo

de Carga de SCT

End Of Section (of highway)

Start Of Section (of highway)

Under jurisdiction of the Secretaria de Comunicaciones Y Transportes

When you encounter these signs anything and everything beyond them are either NO, not the responsibility of the SCT, or YES, the responsibility of the SCT unless the signs are flattened by a big rig.

If upon entering Ciudad Constitucion you should see a Termino de Tramo sign along side the highway, it means the END of the jurisdiction of the SCT, period. No if, and, buts, or maybes. No calles principales or paralelos, sidewalks, cruces de peatones, puentes, zero.

Anybody do this yet?

A couple of years ago Nomads may have played a significant role in limiting the Police Extortion on Hwy 1 in Cd Constitution, the only Federal Highway that connects Northern Baja with Southern Baja. At the time it appeared that Social Networking may have had some influence on decreasing this activity.

At the time Nomads came up with a list of things to do if stopped in Cd Constitution. I don't have the link to that discussion here now. You can find it under the search feature.

I hope people will continue to post on this subject and report your current experience with Police Extortion in Cd Constitution. If it continues then Nomads may again need to assert themselves in the many ways they have of influencing important people to stop this tourism killing activity.

Stop Police Extortion in Cd Constitution on the Only Federal Highway connecting North and South Baja. Highway I is the ONLY way that tourists can drive the entire Baja and Police Extortion in Cd Constitution affects not only the businesses of Cd Constitution but the economies of the entire states of Baja Norte and Baja Sur.

Yo no tengo prisa.

PRINT THIS OUT IN LARGE BOLD FONT AND KEEP A FEW COPIES IN YOUR GLOVE COMPARTMENT. THIS IS A POLITE BUT ABSOLUTELY NO B.S. WAY OF CALLING A BLUFF. JUST BE SURE YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN YOU DID NOT ACTUALLY SPEED OR RUN A LIGHT OR SOMETHING.

Very cool David, and here is the Bing translation:

I'm not in a hurry.

Let's go to the command

I am going to file a complaint

Then, you and I and your Commander is going to talk to the judge.

Then I am going to lodge a complaint with the Ministry

Can you recommend a hotel near the command?

Does anyone here know the actual limite de velocidad on the carratera principal through Ciudad Constitucion?

Does anyone here know the speed limit on the paralelos?

Does anyone here know the law about how to make a left turn or a u-turn off the carratera principal inside the city? Or for that any of ten thousand Mexican cities that have paralelos.

Do you know that it is ILLEGAL to get rear ended while making a left turn in most of Mexico? The hittee not the hitter. Your rear, their front. Big multa and responsibility for the accident? This is an almost universal law with few but well defined exceptions.

Man, I'm glad I only go thru Constitucion every couple years. I've been thru there 7 or 8 times total, and always taken it slow, having heard the reports in the past.

I really hope this situation gets resolved.

We rode through Constitución on two separate days two weeks ago on our trip to the cape. Both times on unlicensed dirt bikes. Went to the bank, the pharmacy and stopped for tacos at our favorite place both times. Saw the police but they weren’t interested in us. Great tacos though!

The speed limit posted on the carretera when you enter the city is 40kph. I've never seen a sign on the service roads.

I'd love to know the actual rules regarding turns and entering/exiting parallel roads through cities. Since we're not sure, we never make left turns from the parallel service roads unless there's a stoplight with a turn arrow and we never turn off the highway on to a parallel road while in the city limits. We do a lot of "going around the block" to cross over the highway to get to the other side of town and to go from the North parallel road across the Hwy to the South one so we don't make illegal turns. It would be great to finally know the rules.

Went through yesterday (Tuesday) heading south. Baja 1000 participants and chase trucks going through at the same time on a transport leg (on the highway, not racing.) The police were stopping all gringos (non mex plates) at the very north end of town before the San Carlos turn off. The muni police at my window told me to stay to the left lane in the center (federal) hwy at 35 KPH and everything will be fine. I almost asked him if that was just a one time special deal because of all the race traffic but thought better of it. I did take the turn west (right) at the San Carlos turn off and then drove south paralleling the highway to the south end of town just to test out that route. Slinking along the back roads.

So what is the advice ?
Mike

Anyone advising you to go to the station is doing so based on their personal experience or heresay that justice will be in your favor at the station especially if you are innocent of any traffic violations.

As I've written recently, someone I know came through CC at night, was stopped, refused to pay a mordida on the street, denied doing anything wrong (I don't know how complete his stops were, or anything else about his driving), and asked to go to the station. He followed the cop down a dark street and he felt threatened when the cop stopped, came back to him asking for money, and refusing a 2nd time, ended up at the station.

The gringo was escorted to a room where a woman showed him a chart that had the prices for the fines -- the gringo was being charged with speeding -- and an additional charge of ''reckless driving.'' Both charges amounted to $50. He paid the fine and left.

So, I'd like to hear some responses to this scenario. Don't pay at the station? Demand to see the Commandante or the Mayor? Hang around till they show up?

I'm not stating that going to any police station won't work, sometimes, but I can state that recently, the outcome was not positive for someone I know in CC.

Whatever your strategy is, be prepared to negotiate.

I sure wish I didn't know about this story, Lee. Before I heard you telling about it, I naively trusted in my old, expired Calif. license and BSing them about "Okay, let's go the station then!" These guys are slick, devious criminals and they're trying to stay one up on us.

Someone here in La Paz made up a form to keep in the car for taking down information to submit a report. I think that would be highly effective, especially if we were all prepared with the mayor's name and knew how to submit paperwork to him. Has anyone ever worked on getting a .pdf made up complete with a complaint form as well as contact information of all parties who the complaint should be sent to?!

A couple of months ago my husband got hauled to the Station - we always go to the station - because he didn't want to pay the cop 500 pesos on the street - for no front license plate and for no seat belt. . ..

It was 570 pesos at the station - with the pay now discount!

Now we carry that receipt in the glove box with the registration when ever he is asked about the front license plate . . . which for some reason has been missing for years.

I would much rather go to the station and pay 570 pesos if it's going to the courts and if I was guilty. Good for you guys for not taking the easy way out and rewarding the thieves.
