I will spill a Mexican beer and think of the origin of the holiday. I will re-read how ten thousand newly freed African-American slaves paid tribute
to a couple hundred union soldiers who had died in a confederate prison camp. The prison had been a horse track prior to the war. In 1865, at the end
of the war, "Colored men" properly buried the union soldiers and built a fence around the graves and erected an archway over the entrance which they
painted "Martyrs of the Race Course".
I will think of the thousands of black children who laid flowers on those graves and I will wonder how far we've come... sipping Mexican beer.
Peace to all who sacrifice.

Our plan is to photograph our visitor from Holland right at the spot where this picture was taken. Hopefully there will be evening light to make the
bridge glow. I'm hoping the crowds will allow such a photograph.
Also plan to show her the view from Twin Towers and maybe a cablecar ride down Hyde Street.
Regarding people to remember, there are 2.
1. Mom's brother was machine gunned by the germans during WWII. He was the youngest and beloved. Everyone tried to talk him out of joining but his
sense of patriotism drove him on.
2. My dad's brother at the age of 14 stepped on a mine during the russian revolution, got gangrene, refused to have his leg amputated, and finally
died. He was the first born.

house sitting in Borrego Springs
A very good friend of ours invited us down to stay at their house for the weekend, while they are away. Very windy here last two days, same wind you
folks in Baja have been getting. This morning dead calm and expected to be in the low 80's, life is good.
Remembering my parents who both loved being out here too, I toast to you..............
Enjoy your weekend wherever it may be.

Doing a run with friends in about 30 minutes.
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Tripledigitken -
Love your photos. The cactus garden with foothills in the back are really nice. And the patio highlighted by the American Flag is great!
Looks like a fun place to spend a weekend.
I will be grilling kabobs on Monday, enjoying some nice Southern California weather.

Memorial weekend grilling fish...with some pollo.
At Lake Metigoshe, ND/Manitoba border, we will be grilling cold-water crappies just like these... along with some
free-range chickens. While remembering & toasting the veterans of the USA armed services. This is a fitting place to be on this holiday...we are
next to the International Peace Gardens..where Canada and USA signed a peace treaty...."to be friends as long as water flows and grass grows."

Whether we will be cooking & toasting under shelter is the question. Right now it's cool and drizzly...but that's Up North for you.
Macht nichts.. Hey, its all good!
..and better than Montana, where its now snowing! Just went thru Billings and Great Falls...today they have 5 inches of fresh snow..break out the
cross-country skis...it's the Big Open..FLAT!

I don't want to hijack the point of this thread about Memorial Day, Bob..but following a custom of some nearby Plains Indians..the Chippewa Nation...I
smudged my bbq fire and watching the smoke. it tells me that tomorrow's weather near your route from Mesquite to Edmonton will be warm precipitation
in the form of Rain..not Snow. Furthermore the smoke says: Mostly cloudy. A chance of rain showers in the morning...Then a slight chance of rain
showers in the afternoon. Warmer. Highs 55 to 60...45 to 50 in the mountains. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of showers 50 percent.
That Late May white stuff will be mostly melted & gone by the time you get there. Got good wet road gripping tires? Then no sweato, amigo.
Buen viaje!
Now back to the Memorial Weekend Plans and BBQs.
