I would like very much to go over to the colony some day. maybe put it on my bucket list.

Our best pot from Mata Ortiz ----we have not been there for a few years, but it is a great trip. Take lots of bubble wrap!

But since ateo is looking for something for planting cactus, I don't think this would be appropriate.

For plant pots, as others suggested, we go to the Tecate area. It is just so much easier crossing the border both ways.

Thats a Very nice piece I am looking for a white one with black trim.

Tecate is the source for most of it.

No worries

JP

This is a white one we bought for our son on our last trip there--

And here is one of the sanders in the village

ATEO, once you get all those beautiful planter pots, think about Mata Ortiz for the inside decorations---the story from there is one of a unique success and, well, it does become addictive.

Mata Ortiz pottery is losing it's value due to over-production. Soon it will be next to worthless unless signed by a notable artist.

There is so much there and so many close by places that are wonderful.

To think that one person, Juan Quezada, made such a difference.

We so need another trip there. A part of the joy is meeting the potters---as they say, up close and personal.

Yes, it is a concern in the Mata Ortiz community and there is a lot of competition between the local barrios.

We just buy what we like. And we did research the different artists so we have some that have gone up in value and some have not---but that is not why we have bought several pieces.

And I wish I could create the absolute worst pottery that came from them. We have one rather flawed piece in our home in BA and people---including me----still think it is a great piece of pottery

Ok, so about 5 km south of Tecate on the road to Ensenada would be a good place to start? Thanks. Thanks for posting those pics Diana T.

yes, you'll see a few places. One on the left heading south is our favorite for garden pots as they have lots that are still left the natural clay colour rather than being painted. You can varathane them (flat or satin keeps the natural look) on the outside for long lasting outside life. The insides can be painted with tar, or varathaned. They also have great statuary cement pieces for the garden.

You can find Talavera sinks on Ebay, in La Paz and Mulege and probably in south Rosarito Beach.

I never remember the name of the tile and sink place we like so well in Ensenada, but it is easy to find. It is on the main street after the turn south and before Costco and Walmart. It is on the west side of the highway --- quite small and on the s/w corner where the Ford Dealer is on the n/w corner.

We have bought both a sink and hand painted tile there and we bought both on our way north and he held them there so we could pick them up on the way south.

Ijole!

The last time I priced a genuine single place setting of Talavera in Puebla, it cost siescientos pesos! There are too many talaveras falsos out there for my taste.

Yeah check out their work with the broken pottery. Take a look in the bathroom for a show of color! I may have bought out all their broken pieces yesterday to tile a bar.
Oh... check those beautiful tortilla warmers too! Great stuff here, many, many sinks!!
