Looking for good rum in Mexicali

We just spent a lot of time looking for good rum in Mexicali and San Felipe. Couldn't fine Flor de Cana (which some Nomad had reccomended) or anything but the most primo anejo of Havana Club -- which we ended up buying, along with a liter of Appleton's. We did see one bottle of standard (yellow label) Havana Club, but it was priced as if it were the anejo, and will probably stay on its dusty shelf forever. That was before we were told that everything but seafood in San Felipe is imported, and hence very expensive. Sure liked the look of the town, though -- or the malecon, at least.

Anyway, we found very few full-sized liquor stores in Mexicali -- after several disappointments we gave in and went to one of those gigantic supermercados, but they didn't have many original ideas. If anyone knows a good liquor store more or less on the way through town, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I'd also like to know how to put a tilde over an "n" in words like Cana.

post for jefe negro over at baja.net - he lives there, so do a few other dirt rider enthusiasts there, if it casn be had they'll know.

as for the other, i think you can tell your key board to adjust in control windows - ask for the one that includes Spanish as the lengua.

"Ley" in Mexicali or Ensenada. If you can find it, try Ron Potosi, in a green barrel shaped bottle with a parrot on the label.

If all you need to do is put in an occasional ?, then the alt control method might work for you. If you want to do a lot of Spanish, correctly, then you need to install a Spanish keyboard and toggle back and forth. I used to give out exact instructions on how to do this when Windows was simpler and the "dead key" function involved accents, tildes and not much else. But, as each iteration offered more exact details and more complicated keystrokes, I stopped because different folks have different versions. I currently have to rely on a set of adhesive plastic key overlays to remind me where things are when I'm working in Spanish. If you want to see what your version has to offer in this regard, start at "start", go to control panel, then either "keyboard" or "language" or somethin similar and see what you got. The more modern software you have, the more options and the more complications.

Ok after much research this is what I found. You must have the num loc on and use the calculator keys not the numbers at the top of the keyboard. I have windows XP. Hope this helps. Hold alt and hit 164 for ? and alt 165 for ?. Try that and see if it works. You may have to do it a couple of times. The letter comes up when you release the alt key. Good luck,k:?::yes:

That only works if you hold the Shift key down with your big toe at the same time.

Thanks, Keri, for figuring this out -- and sticking with it long enough to go through all of the possible combinations for us.

Capt. Mike: With Windows XP, I don't have any Control Panel options to add diacritical marks to my chosen language -- just stuff for numbers and money and like that.

I'll look for a "Ley" store next time I'm down there. Funny name for a liquor store; "Law." Didn't see any of that Ron Potosi in any of the places we checked.

Flor de cana is from Honduras, and don't know if it would be considered fine rum (it was the cheap stuff when I was down there!)...the factory had such an awful smell, you'd know for miles before you hit it.

I still like bacardi anejo, but also tried some flavored rums on my last trip down. I think the brand name was Citron (or something similar)...I was told though, that that is the cheap rum coming out of Jamaica, go figure! The banana rum sure made the cuba libres, though! saludos, H.

p.s. bought at the centro comercial in CSL.

Someone said the Honduran was good, but that we should avoid the Nicaraguan. Thanks for the tip. Havana Club is by the far the best we've tasted -- and it's nice to be drinking something Cuban. Haven't yet tried to bring it back in.

I think most folks in Mexicali buy the higher end stuff at UETA's.

If you want to check out a Leys market try the one at the Plaza Cachanilla - there might be some other stores in the Plaza that have a variety of liquor - but I can't picture one right now.

Sorry I can't be of more help - I'm more of a deposito type guy.
