I know Armando's barrio in México where perhaps a thousand violent crimes are committed a month and zero are reported. They had to sneak el guero in,
in the trunk of a car into the edificio and up the escalera showing no skin and leave the same way.
The family and I had dinner. "We can't let anyone know we have a gringo here or there will be gunfire! Not for us, but between the ladrones - fighting
to see who is the first one to get to you".
Lovely environment. My appetite was not the greatest. If they ever put a gunshot locator system in like thy have in Detroit, or Oakland or Watts, the
server would catch fire.

Inner city joke. A guy walking down the sidewalk gets hit by a runaway car -- he's thrown up against a building, bounces off a fire hydrant, comes to
rest in the street. A crowd gathers around his ruined body but he's still alive and crawls between their legs to flee the scene. The police arrive and
find him, stop him to check his injuries. Cops ask him why he's trying to leave.

The thing is that Detroit, Oakland, South Central LA, Chicago, and other cities in the USA that are notorious for violence, drugs, and homicides.
You almost never hear of people actively trying to discourage others from actually traveling, vacationing, or living in a city like Chicago.
Chicago actually has more homicides than Tijuana, although Chicago is also larger than Tijuana. Now some people like to bring out the percentages of
homicides per 100,000 person, but that can be misleading as well, because in certain areas of both Chicago and Tijuana are considered very safe, and
others areas of the cities considered very unsafe and downright dangerous.
But only in Mexico it seems, if there is a homicide in a Mexico resort city like an Acapulco. We are often told all of Mexico is very dangerous and
should be avoided at all costs!
The fact is places like Cancun and Cabo San Lucas aren't even listed in the US State Department's travel warning nor do they even have a travel
"advisory" in effect, yet you'll always hear the anti-Mexico alarms for Mexican resorts like Cancun, and Cabo San Lucas. In fact you'll often hear the
"alarmist" type ringing the danger bells for the whole country of Mexico.

Petty theft plagues Mexico more than in the USA. This is unfortunate. To test the theory, get into an auto accident and come back six hours later and
look at what's left of your boat. They'll loot a Mexican vehicle or possessions just as quickly. Equal opportunity.

To be fair, DavidE, the article does state that the incidence with crime in the cities in the US goes up with the incidence of poverty. Since Mexico
isn't known for its union wages, the crime rate is probably higher as well in areas of unemployment and substandard wages, which could be

The real-life stabbing in Tarnished Tinsel-Town "could" have come from the pages of a Joseph Wambaugh "Hollywood" series of novels.

I used to drive from the US through TJ for three years at 1 in the morning after my swing shift job in the states, and never had a problem. I walked
around TJ in the madrugada (which by the way is a great word that we really don't have a word for in English) the other night and wasn't bothered by a
soul...never had a problem in TJ...now mind you it's not one of my favorite places but actually they have improved it 1000 percent from 10 years ago,
with renovations to the Plaza Rio section and some nice upscale condos and buildings. It is also much more expensive than Ensenada rent wise due to
the proximity of the border so for the extra hour drive, Ensenada is much more laid back, prettier and much cheaper, several hundred dollars cheaper a
month in rent than Rosarito and TJ.

If I could ever confess to having a "secret" to living a little more securely down here, it is to become part of the community and especially
neighborly with the neighbors. You bet your sweet bippy most regular neighborhoods have a built-in "community watch".

We shouldn't, but he used to be a short lived regular here with different names, Fulano being only one.
There was mengano........and there was arrowhead........and others. I'm convinced he's still here, but I won't mention the name I believe he's using
