Pal's Bar?? Prohibition Era pic?

I was going through some old family photos and found one that was taken in front of a bar....could have been in Tijuana.

Can anyone ID this place or confirm my suspicions...my grandfather (foreground) looks to be early 20's.

thanks...
j

LOL! At that age, he would have been in the middle of prohibition...and with that woman purposely chugging from a flask in front of a camera...well, that says a lot!

Aztec Brewing company was operating in Mexicali in 1921 and later moved the brewery to the USA after repeal of prohibition.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aztec_Brewing_Company

I couldn't find anything about the headliner "Louis Grinst...." on the banner. And I think I'm seeing Baja California coming out of the head of the last woman on the right. On the very top of the bar sign, doesn't that just say California?

I love this kind of stuff, but I didn't dig-up any gold dust for you!

Jeans,

ABC beer was made by The Aztec Brewing Company. It was a regional brewery founded in Mexicali, Mexico in 1921, which moved to San Diego, California in 1933. It closed in 1953. It is being recreated in San Diego as we speak, by the way.

I would focus your search for Pal's in Mexicali.

Ken

Great photo!

was typing this as Vag was also.............

Thanks, guys, for the info on ABC Beer. Above Pal's
Bar it says Cantina and something else... could be the word
Company and a date.

Also, with a magnifying glass, I can see the words La Mejor above the logo that comes after ABC

When ABC moved to the US in 1933 they set up their brewery and tasting room in the Bario Logan area of San Diego which was predominantly Mexican even back then. So maybe the photo was taken there in the 30s which might explain the name "Pals" and the word "California" that may be preceded by "San Diego"

Wow..I had no idea that there was so much history wrapped up in all of this. The reason I thought it was taken in Tijuana was the words "Cantina" and "Baja California" on the building next to Pal's.......and the fact that age 20 would have put him smack in the middle of prohibition. But now I have one more theory!

Thanks!!

The word behind the lady on the right may say IMPRENTA for printing office or printing art.

I think you are right...One more piece to this puzzle. Folks, to help future descendants, label your pictures with the 3 W's: Who, When & Where.

How about the 4th W, "what"? Who, what, where, when.

I have stacks of old Photos with no names and anyone who can ID them have passed away, so I am going though them with a magnifying glass and matching any known faces..Young & old & scanning them. There are still some boxes packed away. I know I have some old Tijuana pictures.

I seem to come from a long line of partiers. Who would've thought?

Edited to include this response about the 4th "W"
More info is better but I am always thrilled to get just a name!
