I agree that any spray, that helps you survive, is ok.
However I know that ammonia water, in a spray bottle, at 10, 15 feet will stop anyone, when in the face or close up.
It also is a great window cleaner, wasp sting, and ray sting aid. And legal.
Pick your option.

Captkw- Yes I have been to Alaska, and I do understand your preference for bear spray, really nasty stuff if you get hit with it. I am also in
agreement with Terry that 20 feet is too close BUT situations usually happen inside that range before one realizes that a threat exists. Per LAPD,
most gun fights are 15 yards and less than 30 seconds. 15 yards with a knife is less than 5 seconds out. That's why my training was 2 center mass at
15 yds from concealed carry in 2 seconds or less. It can be done with time to spare.
I would always give deference to a higher form of deterrent than wasp spray but given that unless one pre plans and gets good bear spray and if one
wants to cross a border with it then wasp spray (available most everywhere) will work. Not as good as bear spray (as you point out) but enough to get
away.
I view concealed carry the same way, I MAY cc a 22 wheel gun with no speed loader but I'm not out to stop a bank robbery either. I'll make a lot of
noise in the right direction and get the hell out of there.
BTW, you need to try Africa for things that bite, been there 5 times and going back for more. Bear spray be damned there, you need to carry real
firepower. :-) :-)
