SD plates - no more red-light or speed camera tickets
Another reason for you permanent ex-pats to use South Dakota for your plates... effective July 1, thanks to a new law signed by Governor Daugaard, the
South Dakota DMV is no longer allowed to share contact information between states when it involves a speed or red-light camera. They can take all the
pretty pictures of you they like.
(Before anyone jumps down my throat about safety, studies have shown that while light-running and speeding tend to decrease, rear-end accidents tend
to increase... not to mention that in most places, traffic infractions have to be witnessed by an actual sworn LEO before fines can be assessed.)

i am shocked at the amount of red light running i see while driving about,... a rear end collision is more survivable than a t bone collision.
seems like benefits of camera ticket operations outweigh the negatives.

I agree with you goat, but so would a 2-second delay between 'RED' and 'GREEN'. There's not a soul in here who hasn't run a little-bit-PINK light in
their lifetime, with a generous 'whew' afterward.
The auto-cameras generate revenue while decreasing expense of officer-patrols. Main thing is $$. Rear-enders are also a wreck, and cause injuries
and damage.
If only South Dakota wasn't so damned far north.....

Well, apparently traffic engineers, law enforcement and local government agencies and the courts disagree.....more and more jurisdictions are doing
away with the cameras.
Rear end collisions, lawsuits & court cases that the jurisdictions are losing because many jurisdictions were found to have non-sworn law
enforcement reviewing the films and the jurisdictions must pay a set fee to the camera companies revenue even if the citation is
dismissed............all in all, not cost effective and collision results were not substantially reduced.

they took them out where I live because the company who ran the cameras were the only ones making any money and accidents did not decrease any. also
people would just ignore the tickets. The city had 90 days to serve by hand a copy of the ticket. to make it valid. cost too much money to do that
and people were fighting about constitutional rights and stuff.

I know I turned right on a red light in Solana Beach a few weeks back and was flashed by the camera. I knew to stop completely as my wife got a camera
ticket at the same right turn. But I didn't, guilty as charged, if a ticket ever comes. Haven't seen it, yet. Hopefully they just left the flash on as
a scare tactic. It's working if so.

In AZ we got to the point that we stopped paying the tickets. They had to issue a ticket that was delivered by process servers. No one answered
their door and after 90 or 120 days, I forget, it was removed.
I had one that I never paid and the server came to my house on Thanksgiving and when we didn't answer he parked at the end of my driveway for quite
some time.
Within 6 months most of the Photo Radar was dead in the state and in many city's.

I have 2 red light cameras within 1/4 mile of my house and they are both one light away from each other! Thye're still turned on. My wife rolled
threw a right hand turn at .00001 mph and they nailed her for $500. I saw the video. She was barely moving.

Do you know if those unpaid citations go to warrant and/or to DMV to place a hold on your drivers license or vehicle registration renewal????

I heard several months ago that the photo system is under re-construction and will re-appear in a new and more legal way. I think it is certain that
it will because it is big dollars to the private company.

In Orange County, the appeals court threw out the tickets because the desk jockey cop who showed up with the laptop with the tickets couldn't give
details on the maintenance of the specific camera in question and couldn't answer technical questions.
They tried... the City of Santa Ana had the decision unpublished, which means it isn't available to search via FindLaw or Lexis-Nexis. But the
Internet is a vast and vengeful land, and the case number and details are splattered all over it.
In Los Angeles, the courts have refused to enforce it because of the conflict of interest when a private company has financial incentive to issue
tickets.

I disagree, I think the use of cameras promote "peddle to the metal" attitude to beat a sigal which can cause a t bone collision or hit the breaks
which can cause a rear end collision.
