Heads up on scam artist phone calls
Yesterday I received a strange call from a 333 number from someone posing as my brother but I knew it wasnt him as he doesnt have an american accent
so I hung up.
Later that day we got a call from an expat here in the village who wanted help dealing with a car accident his nephew was in near GN...he wanted to
figure out how to send 6,000 pesos to the guy who's car the nephew hit. So we spent quite awhile trying to figure out who could go help him in GN, get
money there etc. But in asking more questions it appeared that this was a scam call too as my friends thought to call the "nephew's" parent who
assured them their son was not in Baja.
The point is that it was a pretty good scam that they believed and very nearly sent the money. So I thought I should give a heads up to folks about
this so you dont get taken.
Now I hear that another expat family here also received a call from a 333 number so that was 3 calls in one day in the same village which I thought
was weird and not so random.
Has anyone else received scam calls the last few days? What should we do about it...who do we report the calls to?

Good call Shari. Your efforts may save some innocent person in your community from getting ripped off. We all get these calls from time to time in
the USA, but the farther the victim is separated from the alleged facts, the harder it is to verify/prevent. Your efforts are appreciated.

Thats finally gotten to baja? The phone scams have been going on for years down here. They are usually coming out of prisons.

Someone tried to spell a . s. s. ured
Shari , you should try to come up with what you might have in common with other victims. From what you're posting the perp is getting some personal
info somewhere.

shari,
Thanks for the heads up.
I know not to fall for that kind of scam and usually won't divulge the names of relatives or friends....but my luck changed last week when I got an
e-mail from a law firm in Nigeria that presented a surprisingly good bit of news: an uncle I didn't know I had apparently passed away last month and
has named me as a primary beneficiary. As the e-mail indicated, he was wealthy and I will be getting 1.75 million dollars in Canadian funds next week.
Once I replied to the e-mail, all I needed to do was forward my banking information and answers to the security questions, so they can deposit the
probated funds.
Their reply e-mail indicated the transfer will take several days, and that I should not access my on-line banking in the interim as that might cancel
the transfer.
Boy, am I looking forward to early retirement now !!!!
Don't believe everything you think....

About 6 months ago my mother in law got hit about my son being in trouble in Mexico.
She is 87 and she paid.
Last week my sister in law got the call about her son.
They are very good and have lots of personal info.
Sister in law got her check book but stopped.
It is for real folks.
They live in Central California and are 2nd generation Mexicans.
