The agents that went to the hospital will be tested for HIV for the next 6 months or so if the junky was bleeding, and or they were bleeding. How
about a little HIV for Christmas.
Tough day for everybody. I'm sure the agents we not looking to kill somebody when they came to work and I guessing the junky wasn't looking to die
ether.

Talk about HIV/AIDS myths and misconceptions.
You can't catch HIV just because a criminal suspect was bleeding, and a border agent might have touched him, during a fight.

Well, if the agent had an open wound and a person being appreheded with HIV had an opened wound and bodily fluids were exchanged I would say that
there is potential, however small or large, for a transmission of virus.
Isn't that why most healthcare professionals wear personal protective equipment.
That's what I am my co-workers did for the 1/4 century I was involved with street-level medicine.
Tell me I'm wrong. |
Actually, the possibilities of infection under those circumstances are extremely low. Blood supply is like an artesian well; blood comes out, doesn't
go back in. It's a 'pressurized system', and the virus must be injected, by one form of 'needle' or another. Our PPE in EMS didn't amount to much
when stuck with a 'sharp', and that's where trouble begins. However Mr. Patch, I agree, if it's warm and wet, glove up.
{my edit} on second thought, there's a lot worse critters than the AIDS virus at that point; half a dozen hepatitis strains, TB, all kinds of bad juju
that aren't as fragile as the HIV virus. Much more virulent and contagious, and if the guy was a slime ball, i'd be scrubbing down with disinfectant
pronto. It's a risk all LEO's have to take when grappling.

You're wrong, but since you're involved with street-level medicine, I'm not going to get into why healthcare professionals wear personal protective
equipment.
You also really can't catch an STD from a toilet seat, although it's probably more theoretically possible, especially with warts and crabs jumping
around. But I feel better using a toilet gasket in public restrooms, because there are a few things you can catch in the bathroom.

HIV was the first thing that came to mind. Fighting with a addict can cause health issues. I get into a fight with a junky, I'll be seeing a doctor
quick.
My point is nobody wanted anybody to die, get hurt or to get sick because of a fight Christmas day. I hope you all had a great Christmas, and have
Happy New Year.

That's the problem when you throw out absolutes.
And, yes, I'd be far more afraid of HepC.
And, yes, transmittable bad-stuff was why we all wore PPE. Hell, we had CE's on it every few months.
Our PPE was top of the line. But, we were paid professionals and we were all highly aware of these issues.
I worried about sharps but the street-fighter covered in blood and vomit, well, those were the guys we were careful with. And, if they died they died,
as long as they didn't give me something special to bring home to my family, well, I never lost any sleep or my appetite over it.
You guys continue on with your traditional BajaNomad peeing contest.
I won't.
Peace. |
