Well, given the extremely small odds of finding a person in such a large area who disappeared many months ago and has not used his checking account AND given the fact that they have little resources for searching for him AND given the fact that they have limited time down here, wouldn't it make sense to come down when you have a chance of accomplishing SOMETHING, namely the recovery of the vehicle?

Your right Hook. We all MUST come to the realization that Gary is not with us any longer and the family knows that. If there was a chance that he may be alive then of course we would be all over it. I have told the family to NOT go to obtain the vehicle until the police officer returns because they know him and he will help them in any way he can. He's a really nice guy and soon will return from his vacation. We will get an accounting of the contents of the 4 Runner soon enough and the rancher will give us an accounting of what happened while he has been down there. Just hang loose people.

Reclaming the 4 runner

This action may be of greater importance than one would think.
the vehicle in question was reportedly left unlocked at its present location and could very well become the new home of the renowned local character GOTTA PESO. and once that happens forget it.

Are you joking?

If not, FYI, Gotta Peso was re-located a few months ago and is no longer in Catavina.

Most families want to recover the body for closure and after the realization that the person is no longer alive, most families feel the next important step is recovery. I have heard that recovery is just as important if not more important in a loved one's search for grieving families, to get them to a proper burial site or at rest in an appropriate fashion, whether it be in a cremation urn, etc.

Woody -- Meant to thank you earlier for your offer to meet on June 6 but it does not appear that our guys here can get there as yet. We're still trying to confirm the next travel plan, but appreciate your willingness to help our guys.
And thanks so much to those of you driving by Catavina, letting us know about the car. We also need to know the Commander's schedule in the next few weeks (we were told he is in-office 10 days, then off 10 days, AND he was off the entire month of May on holiday) as LL confirmed.
We do need to retrieve the vehicle this trip to review the inventory and check for clues as to what may have happened. For the search effort, we need the rancher's help, and that is yet to be coordinated as well.
Still want to encourage anyone willing to be a part of the next trip to U2U us and we'll add you to our notification list, once the travel dates are confirmed and we're closer to that leave time.
Also, appreciate the heads-up on Baja events/races that may affect hotel and other travel timeframes, thanks all! You all continue to be amazing contacts for our family!

The car is still there. Tire is still flat.
Two police vehicles were in residence at the station yesterday afternoon.

Do you have a phone number or email through which you contact the Cataviņa police? How are you communicating with them?

You can always go through the Hotel La Mision Cataviņa (ex-La Pinta).

At this rate, car will still be there in 6 months.
They should just go down there and drive it away. Tell the bureaucrats they have flocked around long enough. Fax or email the paperwork ahead of time, tell them that's all they will get, tell them they can meet your schedule if they need more.

Alternatively, go remove personal items from car, and abandon car. Car is not worth hassling over.

It's just a car, don't know why you are delaying searching for body to focus on car.

Re setting up cowboys and rancher for search, just go there and do it. Sounds like you are not getting anywhere by phone. Yes, you will have to devote time. If you don't have time, then forget about it and move on.

At this point I just hope the tow + impound + storage fees (if any) don't add up to more then the car is worth.

Impound fees down here are negligible. Besides, I don't think the car was impounded. I don't even think the state or federal judiciales are aware of any of this. If so, they would have impounded the car.
Another indication that the big boys aren't involved is, serious crimes, or just the suspicion of one, are handled by state or federal agencies...not city cops.

Dearest Nomads, Gary's brother Dave is traveling down this Wednesday 6/11, expecting to get to San Quintin by 2pm, and deal with the District Attorney so all will be in order to claim Gary's car. He will leave then early Thursday to meet with Catavina police commander and retrieve Gary's car and belongings. Also, he'll be arranging to get the car tires inflated, battery recharged, and other things checked before it's to be driven back. He may arrive 9am-12:00pm there, and then he will be trying to get to the car sighting same day. Not sure if he will stay at the hotel Catavina or not Thursday nite, because he may camp out at the Rancher's ranch weather-permitting.

Since he has directions /coordinates to the approximate sight where the car was found, and if the rancher is not there perhaps the Catavina Commander can direct him at least to the ranch. Dave is also meeting up with a dear family friend from Guerrero Negro who is driving up to help with translating and searching for Gary. Anyone wanting to meet up with Dave, send us a U2U, and those who already have, we'll get an email to you if you sent us an email, otherwise look for status updates here.

So tonite, this is the plan, and with hope and prayers, all will go well. Thanks in advance to you Nomads for being there and caring about our painful progress. We'll confirm again tomorrow that things are still a go!

Be safe, be prepared. Take plenty of water. Think about bringing a portable shade. The heat has arrived and non-locals won't be accustomed to it. The sun is brutal.

Dear Nomads, Regretfully, we have to cancel this trip again, because we've been informed tonite that the Catavina Commander will not be at the station when Dave was scheduled to arrive, basically after today.

Apologies for another fire-drill, we had thought Arturo was going to be there, but now we're told otherwise. Hopefully this can happen within the next two weekends as no one wants to be dealing with this the 4th of July, and we sure need it to be before then. Please hang in there with us while we work again to make something happen soon. Our best regards, Nomads.
