Well said.

My heart says that the fair thing in this situation is to follow the rules the generous providers of this contest have set up, (i.e.1 vote per person per day). So how do I deal with the fact that many others-- some of them fellow Nomads-- are gleefully defrauding the contest originators, thereby reducing the impact of my honest vote, by scorning those clear conditions?

Part of what makes a society function is agreement on a set of rules for the mutual good. Sometimes those rules are imposed without representation on required daily activities and may be difficult to follow (for example 60km/hr speed limit on some Mexican freeways). Those are an interesting moral question.

The obvious contempt for the rules in this particular case-- a completely optional activity where the prize is a charitable donation-- is also morally interesting. And to me, disappointing. :(

What I find interesting is the disappointment. It always amazes when anyone places personal disappointment or personal pride in a group of people who have registered for an internet forum. Somehow, there seems to be this illusive family feeling.

OK, most here either do, or have visited Baja or live there full or part time, but that is it---no more, no less.

Yes, we have found information here that had helped us, and we in turn have been able to offer assistance---assistance that would have been offered regardless of a forum membership----and I well imagine that holds true for many. We have met some nomads we like and now consider friends, some with whom we enjoyed a passing meeting, and some we don't care if we ever see again and there are some we hope to never meet in person.

But that is it! If one of my children demonstrated a moral value system which I found wrong, with that I would be disappointed. If one of them suddenly became a supporter of Sarah Palin, that would cause me distress and a feeling of disappointment.

I just find it interesting and maybe a study on how this fairly new technology gives people a different since of friendship, family, a sense of belonging.

Lencho, this is not really a message to you even though I used your quote---it is more a musing about the nature of forums.

I sincerely respect those who see and feel the unethical behavior, but I also respect and feel the other side who have a very different perspective of this situation.

Just some thoughts about the nature of internet forums.

Question of attitude rather than medium. I've worked in online communities since long before the WWW made them accessible to the general public, and there is nothing "illusive" about the relationships in many of them. Example: this forum is running on Linux and Apache, major open source software development projects maintained by groups of people spread around the globe working tightly and sincerely together for the greater good. Many have never met in person, and would laugh at the allegation that their ties to their fellows are any less real than if they were sitting in the same room.

It's possible to be shallow and insincere in person or on line. It is also possible to be real in either medium.

--Larry

Interesting, and I respect and appreciate your thoughts---as I said, I was just musing. And I agree with your last statement. However, and this is just from some personal experience so it probably cannot be globalized--- From this forum and other forums we have met people who do a great job of sounding sincere on line, and are totally different people in person.

It is more than just what might be a false first impression when meeting someone---their online persona seems quite real, and that is not always the case. Then again, there are others who are sincere in both venues, from our experiences.

Thus, illusive might have been the wrong word to use---and if it is a some kind of family, well I guess I could accept that----probably not any less or more dysfunctional than a live family. And I have a few family members with whom I do not want to spend time with. Sincerity can be false and motivated by other forces both on and off line.

Thanks, your explanation made it easier to understand, as they say in one of those well over used statements, where you are coming from.

The internet has been a revolution in many areas.

Diane

wow, this thread got a whole lot more interesting the last couple days...

Vag....I LOVE the idea of elders pointing out when one "SLIPS OUT OF INTEGRITY" what a lovely way to put it...face it folks, we have all slipped on occasion...sometimes unintentionally or with the best of intentions... and if we could only gently help our fellow man/woman not slip up as often...the world would be a nicer place.
Boy am I glad I stuck to voting only once a day!!

For me, it is not as much saying or acting in a way someone would not dare to do face to face, it is more the insincere presentation as to who someone really is----one who loves and cares for all, especially other members of the forum---met too many who when the chips are down, run the other way. Some talk like Father Joe and act more like Bernie Madoff.

Sure has! Though I'd qualify that as "WWW" rather than "Internet", since most people use only that particular subset of the myriad of services the Internet makes possible. I personally put it (WWW) on the same level of importance as Gutenberg, but one level beyond: the press made practical the mass distribution of information to the public. The WWW has put mass distribution of information *by* the public.

Saludos-- Larry

I definitely plead computer and internet and www ignorance---extreme ignorance. However, I really like your comparison to Gutenberg----both methods of mass distribution have changed everything from politics to religion.

Well, since this thread has been totally hijacked, it is a good thing the other thread started----also probably time to end it----

There is obviously a strong difference of opinion among some about ethics, morality and the acceptance of other's---lectures and conversations that are probably better left alone.

Actually, my questioning of forums was probably not a fitting question, I am always curious about the new dynamics created by this revolution.

Saludos
Diane

I have NOT stopped voting once a day. On the subject of forum dynamics I find it interesting that after "playing daddy" and starting this ethical discussion, how afraid I am that I've harmed the effort to win the contest. There are folks on this board, whom I've never met, that I really consider to be friends. Since I try to process my communication through the filter of "is it clear, concise, direct and truthful?"I choose to refer to them as "cyber-friends".

If nothing else, this discussion has kept the donation link bumped to top of the list, and I hope that helps.

Nah...you didn't do that. All you did was voice a valid opinion. Since that, your posts have shown an unearned remorse. We know you weren't being mean but, your judgement was correct. Don't punish yourself for that.
And, don't punish me for my observation.

I think all is well here now...thanks to you and your willingness to stand up. I thank you for that.
