Really all you got to do is show up and ask. They are all a great bunch of characters. What is most important is the tackle you take and be sure to bring extra because they are going to need some too.

We just had friends who just came back yesterday and stopped at Campo Rene. They are now "trying" to charge $50 for one of the little shacks or $15 for a camper under a palapa. Our friends just laughed and then went in to Abreojos and stayed at Chelo's and paid $28 a night and figured that was one of the nicest motel rooms they had stayed in.

WoW. I need to check...Just last month it was 10-15 depending on who you were. I'll talk with Nardo (the owner in GN) and find out what is going on. At that rate no one will go there

They think you are all rich if you drive a new vehicle down there and throw money around like you are. I told them the rich could buy 1000 new vehicles and still have plenty of money left over.
You all know it is a contest in Abreojos to see who can get the most gifts from the gringos to prove how smart they are, don't you?

Tthis is one of the greatest posts I have read in months................almost all of it so positive and painting the locals as they should be painted.................as friends.

Thanks to all of you for refilling my 'life' tanks.

Abreojos - I don't get the feeling its that way at all. Sorry you left them with the impression that we are all so rich - Most AmericansI know (there are a few exceptions) live/go there because it is such a nice place.. not to shower the locals with gifts. and I certainly wish we could buy a thousand new cars. I certainly can't.

I did not give them that impression. I tried to explain the difference to them who was rich or not. For them a new car means cash, not 0 down, 0 interest for 6 months and $1,500 rebate on a 5 year loan. I fit in there a little differently than most and this is not a bad thing. But it is a fact, even if you haven't seen it and it does not apply to everyone. Abreojos for the most part is a good place, but take a look at what is going on with my trailer. They took it off my property without my permission, have not paid for it and are renting it out now. What do you call that? Good neighbors? The delegation knows about this, including the police and they alow it to happen because I am not rich and they know it and certain people like to control everything that goes on there including you!

George, it is Marco's family and although it's a long list and it just they way these people are, have been and are going to continue to be. Several people from this board were looking for a trailer to buy in Abreojos, I have one, but when they contacted Martin asking if he knew of one his family was not trying to sell it, pay for it or ask me if it was ok to rent it. All you can do is be aware of this and play it to your advantage. To the men, a cabrone is someone intellegent. To the women he is someone who lies, cheats and steals. That's the attitude.

Abreojos my friend. Don't know about you trailer but I do know these people. Gifts come in many ways. An abalone dinner, lobster dropped off at the door step, someone bringing un seis de tecate just to talk on the porch, a baseball game with friends, invitation to all the fiestas, policia dropping by just to see if everything is OK, trip to Loreto (free) after a friend wrecked his quad and hit his head, unhastled fishing on the beach, invitations to fish from the pangas, free breakfast at Las Palmas after too much the night before, and on and on. Think I'll stay

No doubt about it, I've experienced the same, but that still doesn't change anything. That's why we have let things slide this long. We keep hoping it all ends up ok. But everytime I think about it, I keep coming to the conclusion; with friends like that who needs enemies?

One thing you got to admire about Mexicans, they understand the phrase "united we stand, divided we fall" This story goes much deeper than we have covered here. Sometimes I forget, or like to forget what is really going on. And going over it with you guys has reminded me what I am dealing with. Having my wife point out the difference among Mexicans helps. She is Mexican and it has taken her years to finially see me understand the people in Abreojos clearly. We have even had people who live in Abreojos tell us what I am trying to say here.
It is not an attack on anyone or these people are bad kind of deal. It just is the reality of what is going on. It is what makes Abreojos what it is. If you don't stand up to the bullies, they'll steamroll you. Bigger and stronger get you your way, just like the old days. The social structure in abreojos goes back hundreds of years because most of the people are from San Ignacio and it is the same there.

OK, my two centavos here...I can really understand what you're getting at here Abreojos as things are explained in a very different light by a mexican spouse. What appears to be reality to a gringo...is simply....not....(not always but very often) I don't know diddely about your situation but I do know about the culture in our area and it is fickle indeed and very often a single powerful family DOES control more than one would think and if you go against the grain....look out...also its very true about the bullies steamrolling you...been there ....done that...thank Dios for my mexican husband to open my eyes to the REAL realities here. Screwed up but real...and ya gotta deal with it. But the beauty of nature here outweighs the weird stuff.

I try to stay out of local politics but I know very well that being married to a local gives one a WHOLE new prospective on life in these parts...very interesting and so right about the San Ignacio thing...most families in these parts originally came from there...names are everything here...glad I'm married to an "Arce". I lived here 13 years before I married him and thought I knew most everything about baja culture...wrong....we just think we know but there is a whole different world inside their heads....that most of you will NEVER know even if you think you know. It's very complex and historical and difficult to believe but I now am beginning to understand it as I'm seeing it firsthand now. It is incredible what your so called "amigos" are capable of doing to you...even family members....very strange & sad...but true. But I don't feel so bad as I also see it within their own families and friends...so it's not just that gringos are getting screwed...it's a national pastime historically....ni modo. Iflyfish has an interesting opinion on this.
