How could that go wrong? My name is never on the paperwork! My guess is that it is done that way all the time. The new owner deals with the Mex reg.
He just says he bought it in the US right?

Fish,
Who would NOT sign the pink and ask for a transfer of title to be filled out by YOU?
He (the seller) opens himself up to a huge liability the minute you leave with the vehicle...
If selling a vehicle was as simple as you hope it will be then everyone would be doing it.
Sorry, my morality is kicking in all of a sudden.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

The only way this may have a chance of working, is, if you register the vehicle in your name in California, bring it down here and sell it to a
gringo, who would have to transfer ownership back in California and get the vehicle in his name.
Vehicles are sold between gringos that way all the time.
Better take some time looking into this. Those Mexican slammers are no picnic. |
Thank you Vandenburg. How do I sell one to a Mex citizen? |
You can't.
That is highly "ILLEGAL" and will get you a free trip back to the old US of A after a long stretch in a Mexican Pen.
Try it , you like it.

Ya, the not signing the pink didn't make much sense.
I do see alot of people doing it. Cars on dollies every trip.
I'm not trying to make you guys mad at me. But you all see ready to put me into the Mex jail.
I'm brain storming. I'm always brain storming ideas to make a living in Baja. This just seems like something I can do.
I can drive cars. I can buy cars.
If I can find a buyer and work out the details... legally... then I would do this.
Also I could eliver thigs to people from the states northern Baja.
So quit trying to put me in jail. I'm a good guy and I do play by the rules.
But thank you for the useful suggestions. Keep em coming!

My understanding is that you cannot legally sell any unimported car here. There is a reason for importation. Some do it none the less, but they take
a risk. Would you run a business in the US that was known to be illegal?
And one could say that you were running a business here if you did it often and for a profit - which would require a working FM3, which you are
unlikely to get.
Sorry to rain on your parade. But Mexico has rules, just like other countries.

Con artist? That's a good thing right?
I guess you mean me. Why do I sound like a con-artist? If I was a con-artist I'd be trying to sell condos at Loreto Bay would'nt I?
But thanks for the vote of "con"fidence!

Not a bad idea! I better begin (more) research right away. I think I'll start in Ensenada.

Easy with the name calling Newbie, many of us know this guy, like other Nomads. Fishbuck is just thinking out loud.
He's harmless, we keep him around just to humor us.
So what's your story drzura, get to Baja much?

Newbie I am 32 years old, have been to Baja a "few" times I grew up in Oceanside and my parents used to bring me to Baja for our
vacations, and I have been doing the same with my daugther. I love going to Baja. I plan on retiring down there in the future. I was down there
last summer and may be going down this summer for about a month (depends if they approve my leave).

Maybe you should talk to some used car dealers to see if you can deal with them in a legal way. Maybe talk to various police chiefs to see how they
get their cars/trucks and how you could help them, again in a legal way.

truck sales
My husband and I thought selling cars down South was a pretty good idea, too, and we made out OK the 2 times we tried it.
We were living in Playas de TJ at the time and had a Ford Ranger 4X4 that was imported. Drove it down to La Paz and think we found a buyer in San
Jose. Made a bit of $$ on that.
We also had a US Volkswagen Golf that we traded in TJ for a little imported mini-van. We drove the van down and did another trade for a piece of
land! We've got a large lot in Pescadero, Los Cerritos beach, that is now in my husband's name.... and then we got out of the business! This only
worked for us because of my husband's connections. The land trade was with his ex-father-in-law and is kind of an inheritance for my step-sons. Nice
piece of property, though!
I think you would have to import the cars first, but I don't know the legality of doing this. Lots of people do, but think they are set up as
legitimate businesses.
The other option may be to get the clients lined up first and then bring them down what they want. We are always getting calls from relatives in Cabo
or La Paz that want a particular car and have so much to spend, etc. We've done it a couple of times, (bought cars in the US and had them imported in
TJ and then had the new owner pick them up), but it's a lot of work and time!
Don't know if this helps, just thought I'd share my experience. Saludos, H.

I would like to see more first response capable small trucks and ambulances in the smaller towns and communities......might be a worthwile project.
Maybe Terry 28, Soulpatch and Alan can chime in with their expertise.

I may be able to shed a little light here. The folks towing cars are Mexican citizens that bought them at the auctions in San Diego and San Ysidiro
and are legally importing them. You can do it Fish but it is a large hassle for a gingo looking to make "quick' bucks...probably not worh the big
hassle unless you get hooked up with a local importer, Now for Terry's question on fire trucks and meat wagons (ambulances), Those get donated by
various departments,in U.S. sister cities, (sold for a dollar on the paperwork) and driven down. You neet to get U.S. folks with the equipment to get
the ballrolling. This happens all the time. Sometimes the state dept. gets involved other times it is handeled by the Mexican Govt.
It can be done with effort by both the receiving dept. and the sending one. Hope this helps at least a little.....
Mexico!! Where two can live as cheaply as one.....but it costs twice as much.....
