Another thought was to use 2 smaller coolers.....one for drinks and stuff you use more often and another for prepared lunch/dinner meals that only gets opened once or twice a day.

kinda thought that you did this already. we take 3 coolers. on for food with a block. one for beer with a block. one full of blocks taped shut and sealed. we usually open the sealed one on the 3rd day and pull out 2 blocks which last 1-2 more days. repeat.

i like the combo unit above.

The new extended days coolers do work better... I have 2 now. In my back yard, the ice lasted 7 days keeping holiday beer cold!

Extended-Days Ice Chests

Ever the cynic, I "thought" that those 8-days coolers were probably a rip and stuck with the standard units until last year when Walmart "incorrectly" priced a display. Deciding that the price was just too good, I bought one. Of course, at the checkstand, I was informed that the price was wrong. BUT, true to their policy, they gave it to me at the cheaper price.

BIG DIFFERENCE. Worth the price. I've since bought two more and gave away my old ones to friends.

If it wasn't for that pricing error, I'd still be using the standard ones.

I have used dry ice on many ocassions and it will last a very long time if you do it correctly, first of all you need at least 2 ice chest one that you can keep things in without touching for awhile, the other, this is the trick take the dry ice and wrap it with newspaper this is a conductor of heat and cold, next duct tape the ice chest around the openings, I'm telling you 8-10 days without a problem.
