Just got an e-mail from Sandford and Izzy who live at Rincon in the south bay, they said they don't know of any damage but it was a really good shaker and their house seemed to move 2 feet side to side. They can see my house accross the bay and it is still a 2 story so that's good news.
Larry
PS pretty sure that was Paulina on the news
PPS I have lived in BoLA for 11 years and traveled around there extensively and I have no idea what or where Santa Isabel is. Must just be a rancho or something.

That was me, after talking on the news I am applying for novela status down here. Dern and I were hanging out at Casa Diaz when Fox news called. Chubasco handed me the phone saying that they wanted to talk to an americano.

Earlier in the morning we were hanging out at our place when the quakes started to hit. They didnīt feel like all that, maybe a 3 or 4. Our place rocked pretty good, it moved our truck, but it wasnīt a biggie. Fom what we gather it was centered right off la guarda island, 6-9 ish on the Rictor scale.

The Delgado came on the radio to inform the town of the shaker and to caution people from being on the coast.

We talked to Ruthie out at Rincon as it was going on. We could hear the quakes coming as we spoke, but they werenīt enough to cause great alarm. Larry, your place is fine as well as all the other places on that strip.

We drove into town for an ice run as the dorado are in and that is when Fox news found us at Casa Diaz. They called Chubasco, he handed the phone to me. From that point on it was live talk from the store back and forth. i didnīt have death and distruction to report so the interview was short. (itīs been a wierd trip, more of that to come when i find a decent internet provider)

my theory is that because we are on the epicenter, the quake wasnīt so severe, kind of like the wake off of a boat. it must have got stonger as it headed n other directions.

As I told the reporter on the phone, life is good in Bahia de los angeles.
Itīs hot here. Fishing is good. I will be signing autographs in punta banda on aug. 11th.

P< )))<

ps- i canīt get used to the baja keyboard. arg.....

Bill, maybe the sinking island should be called Atlantis!!

The news boobs back East just put out this: " The statement further read, "Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides"

We can all breathe a sigh of relief now and go back to our cold cervezas!!!

As i was talking on the phone to fox news, one local did come in to buy supplies. he heard the report come over the radio from the delgato and was on his way to agua amarga to be ahead of the sunami. He was going to miss out on the batch of cevcechi that was being prepared at the same time as we watched him drive off to higher ground-

Trying to figure out how fast a tsunami travels. We were putting our boat in a slip at almost exactly the same time it occurred.

I see it was 6.2 miles below the surface but one must know the depth of the water to figure the speed of a potential tsunami. I found an equation that says a quake in 20,000 feet of water can travel 550 mph!!! This could have been in about 1/4 of that depth so IF it is proportionally reduced, any tsunami should have hit us.

Just got back from the harbor. My boat is still floating and the docks are still there. :smug:

Hook,

It is the town at the west access to San Borja from Mex 1, between BOLA turnoff and Jesus Maria.

Speaking of Mission San Borja, I hope it didn't sustain any damage!:(

Paulina- Thanks for the update, the place I am most curious about is the old rock building behind Anne and Elwyns place. The east wall has moved about 6" and that was before I left in July, it didn't look like it would take very much to knock it down.

Russ- I see Santa Isabel on your map but trust me there is not much there, that is in the El Arco area (but appears to be a little north) and other than a few scattered ranchos there is nothing there.

I see. That's just the closest point of reference on land. This thing was centered in the ocean.
