WHEW! That sounds a lot better!

Sorry for the confusion, 'rabbit. The first post sounded a little vague, folks were just concerned for your well-being.

Sounds like you have a handle on things and like I said, if noone come forward now re-post in a few weeks.

HAVE FUN!

We are both also blessed in that we grew up about an hour from a riding area called Wellsville that has been politely described as the evil step brother of the Yuma Proving Grounds. It was like growing up with an insane off road training ground close to home. Got a nice route layed out with proven GPS tracks from other riders, and the passport cards coming. Can't wait to get back again.

Sounds like you are riding off road to La Paz... Maybe using Kacey Smith's Baja GPS Guide, Volume 2? This E Book is desigened for m/c riders and routes that stay off the highway. http://bajagpsguide.com

If you are keeping it all off road.. then great... You will have a blast... Remember that fuel is not available where you may need to have it, so have your chase truck meet you where you will be getting low!

The reason many here question using the highway is bacause it is very narrow, with no shoulders and often is elevated with drop offs. This highway south of San Quintin is barely 20 feet wide and should never be used by bicycles or ATVs because they don't maintain a safe velocity. Here is a photo I took 2 months ago of Hwy. 1 between El Rosario/ San Quintin:

Watch out for black cows, too!

The Hiway averages about 19ft. between the white lines. I have stoped at different places along the route over the years and got out of my truck and grabed my tape measure and measured it a many spots, just out of presonal curiosity. It does get wider the farther you go south.

I see you're point BajaWarrior, some people really can't read, or just don't bother to read before they respond. Really blown away by the fact that so many people on here don't understand the concept of riding off road in Baja. Especially love the guy who says you can't drive a quad on pavement at high speed without flipping it. Our route, recommended by other riders who have used it, does unfortunately have one section of about 20 miles of pavement, which is going to eat a bit at the tires. Fortunately since the ATV can maintain 65mph (without danger of flipping if you not totally incompetent) it won't take long to put that behind us. Some of the rougher off road sections Meredith will probably be able to outrun me on that quad versus my bike. I would like to thank all the people that sent me U2U messages telling me to ignore the naysayers who don't get it.

Yeah...You've got a point. lots of people post here just to see themselves talk. I do it myself, sometimes.
The fact remains, relevant or not, nobody wants to see you as a hood ornament on a Freightliner.
I'm sure you'll run your trip and, hopefully, without incident but, you will come away from it with a new-found respect for HWY 1.
Have a good trip.

I just assumed you were. How are you going to get there? I guess you'll need some big-ass wire cutters if you plan to go off road and don't forget to close the gates behind you.

There are still many ways to go from north to south than on Hwy. 1 folks...

Heck, even the maps show them! As I mentioned before, there is an E book with total GPS directions to use the Baja 1000 course and other roads and trails from the past to ride to La Paz on dirt.

For example,

Coco's to Bay of LA via the Calamajue wash.

Bay of LA to San Francisquito

San Francisquito to Vizcaino via old SCORE course through Rancho Miraflores.

Vizcaino to San Ignacio via Mex 1

San Ignacio to San Juanico via El Datil (mud flats) or the rocky washed out inland route.

San Juanico to Ciudad Constitucion (mostly pavement)

Cuidad Constitucion to La Paz via San Evaristo on the coast. (you'll need a 180 mile fuel range, but you may find fuel in one of the towns, Tinajitas IIRC)

Vizcaino to San Ignacio

Actually... you can use some of the old main road (pre-1973)!

We spotted it just east of Mex. 1, a few miles south of Vizcaino (just south of El Tablon on the old road): (photo from 2 months ago)

I think you'll be fine. The ranchos can be a welcome sourch of help when needed. Wish I was going with you.

["Coco's to Bay of LA via the Calamajue wash."] Be really carefull on the water crossings. Dirt bike probably OK but not sure about the ATV. There is one crossing that is pretty deep. May want to walk it to be sure. It not far from where you drop into the wash and you'll know when you get to it.

Rather than ride the quad/ dirt bike on Hwy. 1 in the small sections you list... You may be able to ride along side the highway at the base of the elevated roadbed... But, if you can maintain 55 mph, that should be good.

A great photo by jrbaja showing the lack of passing room for anyone other than an auto on Hwy. 1 (south of San Quintin):

Go for it!

Let your mother do the worrying. Jeez, if someone wants to loan me a dirt bike or an ATV, I would go with you. And I won't be your father, either!:bounce:
