Nena,

Mojave's got to be the windiest place in California. I don't know what it is about that place. We always stop there on the way to Death Valley. One year it was sooo windy we had to walk leaning forward to make headway. I had to hold on to the youngest to get to Dennys. But on the way back - volare.

My only beef with Dennys is that they never cut out the white center of the tomatos when them serve them. I don't why that bothers me, but I just had to say it. You're left with a choice of either chewing around the tomato or just leaving them be. It's one of those unpleasant decisions you have to make at Denny's.

I like the lake pictures the most. I can't believe how much ice there was on Topaz Lake. The area I float tubed seems to be under ice. There's a nice coffee shop on the highway just past the spot you took the picture. Did you stop there?

Lee Vining is probably my favorite town in the Eastern Sierras - in the summertime. The picture of Mono Lake is my favorite in the series. It looks wonderful with all that snow along the banks. Invigorating, you might say.

Yep, Paula, it was most deliciously cold. Even in the car I had wool sweaters spread over my legs and kept my ski hat and mittens on. Nice to experience real winter after several years of missing it completely.

Clever, amigo.:lol::lol::lol:

Also Igor, I think you are a more discerning Denny's patron than I. It was Thanksgiving. Everything was closed including markets. I was thanking the goddess and singing hallelujahs over the mere fact of my tomato being red and also tasting exactly like... a tomato.;D

Baja12valve BarBQBill's is in Bishop, not Mojave. Right on the main drag on the left going north.

Thanks for the update. I figured that out as I Googled it to see exactly where it was.
From the number of the responses, maybe there should be a sub-forum, "395"
Actually, I usually end up at Primos in Mojave. It seems that by the time I get there, I am ready for a bite. Bishop is too far to drive before eating, although I like to stop at the Mountain Light Gallery. A friend of mine will be exhibiting there soon.

Such a beautiful part of the world with such an interesting history and so many places to explore----and there do seem to be lots of fans here. One of our favorite places.

But I do prefer it with a little less weather than Nena's photos show---some weather, but not that much!

Mojave, has anyone ever been there when it was NOT windy?

Nena, I keep going back to the Topaz lake photo---just really love that one.

Diane

Eating in the Mohave.

Domingo's in Boron.

Excellent Mexican Food stop, we drive out of the way from 395 west to Boron just to go there.

The owner was and probably still is the Mayor of Boron, nice guy.

It's looking like I need another trip down 395 - on a non-holiday weekend. Do all that exploring hoped for over the Thanksgiving holiday, eat well in Bishop and Boron, visit the Mojave airplane museum. I'm also going to be sure to check the center of my tomato no matter where I eat, as well as to nicely ask someone about the plethora of Bible quote signs. Already it's shaping up to be another fun trip.

I couldn't agree more. Lots to do there, lots to see, White Mountains, Manzanar, DV, Whitney (4x to the top), Mojave Road, the list is long. A lifetime of exploring. I am not too sure if I hate the LA Dept of Water and Power for stealing all the water and ruining the valley, or by stealing all the water, they preserved it in time.

I also find that one troublesome for the same reasons. I have argued both sides of that one all by myself.

Nena, for a lesson in yard art, Keeler, just outside of Lone Pine is a must see. And they recently won a major law suit against the DWP for dust abatement from the now dry lake---quite an operation going on there now.

You Were Lucky

Great trip report, wonderful photos. Have to tell you that at that time of the year, you were lucky headed North.

For 15 years or so, a group of us spent Thanksgiving at Harrahs in Tahoe. We drove up from the LA/OC area. Approximately 1/3 of the time, there were chains required above Bishop. Have any idea how long that trip is on chains from Bishop to Carson City? Long!! Slow!! The beauty of the surroundings almost made up for a 15mph drive.
