I don't have pets, allergies, but I know that these animals are a source of unconditional love and there is little enough of that in the world. People open their hearts to these animals and when they are gone a part of them is gone too.

Grief is a powerful emotion and one that many of us avoid. Under the anger is a whole lot of saddness and with the saddness a profound sense of vulnerability. Men tend to hold on to and act angry rather than to open up to the more vulnerable feelings.

When my father died I grieved powerfully for an entire year. It takes a long time to finish all the losses that we have experienced in our lives that are re-stimulated when someone or somethng we love dies or is killed. This is not an easy road.

I am so sorry that you have experienced this loss and one that was clearly avoidable. Expressing our loss is an important part of the grieving process and you have touched me with yours. We all have experienced losses like this and it hurts!

See you soon.

Jesse,

Up here NOB in the city I live it is now illegal to allow a cat to go outside or at least leave our property, so it petty much means cats are indoor animals here.

I assume this law came about from "issues" that cats deliver to adjacent properties.

We have two indoor cats and they seem to thrive once adjusting to not going outside and have taken over running our household.

this law has been in place in california for 30+ years

if a cat leaves your property it's considered a "wild animal" and can be trapped

if you don't get the cat from the pound soon...its gone
we learned this the "hard way"

our neighbor did the same thing
we took them to court and lost:o

The irony of your anger, yet serving up dead carcasses all night long is not lost on me. (In no way am I trying to preach ...I never have and never will) ... just pointing out the obvious.

There are so many thoughts coming out in this thread that are unnecessarily cruel.

Seems to be the overwhelming attitude here ("Hang the bastid, whoever he is"). Without consideration of the other side. Would be interesting to know what was going on in the neighbor's mind to drive him/her to take desperate measures against the invading pet.

Jesse, this trap WAS in someone else's personal space, right?

Lencho,
I feel that when cruelty to animals is present, then the scale of justice tips way over to the side of the pet owner, in this case Jesse.

No matter if the cats were a nuisance on the guy's property. His first course of action, as Jesse has said, should have been to talk to him first. If unheeded, then perhaps a harmless trap with which to capture the cat(s) would be warranted. The guy would then be justified to take the cats to a shelter or even let them go elsewhere. Hurting them or killing them should not be an option. If they are taken to a shelter, at least euthanasia is humane.

The differences in culture shouldn't be an issue either. There are lots of obnoxious attitudes and practices in all cultures. Mexico certainly does NOT escape this observation. Jesse is bi-cultural. The neighbor should have been even more comfortable in approaching him.

Sorry, Jesse. I hope this cat is OK.

Jesse,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm hoping this will soothe your soul and warm your heart....

Last Night

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here.

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.
