sounds like crisx has an axe to grind with some one in some state somewheres- (yea, I know it's spelled wrong)
recent personal experience in Washington state...USA....
I'm driving a 1-ton work truck, full box compartment set up/wide body with normal service truck mirrors. I'm driving home in the summer along a rural
2-lane highway with full shoulders (at least 2 feet of shoulder) and come around a corner (legal speed limit of 60 mph) right up on 2 bikers riding
side-by-side. One biker is safely on the wide shoulder, the other biker is 6-8" over the white line in the vehicle lane...NOT on the shoulder!
I'm driving a freaking 1-ton work truck, fully loaded with tools and materials! It Does NOT SLOW DOWN QUICKLY! And now add into the equation...
THERE'S AN ONCOMING CAR!
So My question to you, crisx, is....what should I do? oncoming car, 2 bicyclists riding side-by-side with one in the vehicle lane, ample room to ride
single file on the shoulder if they chose to do so....
Crisx, who is right? Should I stay-the-course in my lane and wipe out the cyclist? should I swerve over the centerline and wipe out the car, which
might have children in it? What should I do?
Do they have a right to ride side-by-side and endanger the lives of everyone involved in the episode I just described? Themselves, myself, the people
in the oncoming little car which would have been plastered if I had swerved over the line to avoid the bikers and then hit the car with a 1-ton
truck.....
This is a true life experience, and you can thank "whomeveryouwish" that the oncoming car saw the situation and moved over onto their shoulder so I
could cross the centerline to avoid plastering the stupid cyclist who was riding in the vehicle lane!
I saw something recently about a family cycling down MX1 with little kids in the tag-along-thingies. All I could think of was to pray. "Merciful
Lord, please watch over these fools and protect those babies."

You may have the RIGHT to ride MX1 on a bicycle, but is it smart? Is it safe? Why would a person deliberately put themselves at the mercy of others
reactions to stay safe?
You are banking your life on the fact that all the drivers on MX1 have ample room and there are no wide loads, and they are all fully rested and awake
and actually give a crap about others safety when it's a choice between swerving over the line towards the crumbling edge of the pavement to avoid a
rider.
Let's roll the dice, ride MX1 and see who wins...is your life worth it just because you have the RIGHT?
sounds like maybe crisx needs an airline ticket, a rental car and mas cervesas!
edit- just to be clear to crisx- I ALWAYS swerve around cyclists as you described, we have LOTS of riders on the rural roads in our area. But
cyclists gotta realize not every vehicle on the road is an ultra-responsive sports car, that can slam on the brakes every time they come upon a
pedalpusher! and when bicyclists deliberately put themselves in harms way, when there is ample room to ride safely on the shoulder.....
I'd never say they deserve to get hit...but....~~~

As long as he know's the risk I support his adventure. A lot of people make that ride every year and love the ride.
That being said it doesn't change the laws of physics.
I thought he was going to ride on dirt roads?

Another thing....Not only drunk, deranged retirees drive HWY 1. Mexicans drive it as well and one of their favored pastimes is "Hit 'n Run."
And another....If you think you have rights in Mexico, then you haven't been paying attention.

crisx, I hope you're getting the message. Doesn't have anything to do with a theoretical "right" to use the road. Has everything to do with the
reality - the fact - that the roads are narrow and not wide enough for two semis and you on the road. With all the blind curves, the number of semis,
hundreds of occasions every day when the fatal configuration is lined up (2 semis and a bicycle, bounded by a guard rail or sheer cliff), only a
matter of time before YOU will be the little white cross on the side of the road. Bicyclists are no more or less of a nuisance than a goat or a cow
on Mex 1. Heed the advice.

I'm sitting here in my truck at our jobsite...reading this junk of yours.
You write as if all of us here at BN are lazy, weak, and are chair lovers. Most of us go to Baja for hiking, racing, quad riding, dirt biking,
fishing, and bla bla bla. Hell...some of us even build our houses and such when down there. We get involved with the local communities. We help lost
souls with donkeys....and others that "claimed" to be lost in their red cars(!).
We do all this...while you are peddling your little bikie, wearing them cute tights too.... I bet. You cant be wearing an helmet for I am sure of
that....manufactures dont make them for a diminutive person such as you.

As one who frequently drives the peninsula and who also was once foolish enough to ride the Baja on a bike (and I haven't yet outgrown the idea of
doing it again), I've seen both sides of this argument.
What I found most interesting during my ride was that the only people who seemed they couldn't care less if they cut it too close or not (with their
side mirrows to my head) were foreigners. Mexican drivers, without exception, were gracious and supportive as they passed by. Going up the grade north
of El Rosario, a Coca Cola truck followed me up the last couple of curves, in spite of my best efforts to wave him on. He probably thought I needed
protecting from those crazy gringos following him.
That said, I was once driving behind a group of foreign cyclists who insisted on riding two abreast, which really, really got my skivies in a wad. For
them, I have to admit, I got on my horn and gave them a hardy one-finger salute accompanied by some of my "best" sailor talk screamed out the truck
window. Since we were north of Santa Rosalia and I knew there was a Policia Federal station in a few miles distance, I took the time to inform myself.
These jokers were totally within their legal rights to ride two abreast, so long as they had a vehicle with an amber light flashing in front of them.
As my brother use to say to me; you may be within your legal rights to ride wherever, but you may end up being dead right.
I also found out that the fastest one can legally drive on any part of the two-laner Baja road is 80KPH, about 50MPH, and since we all respect the law
of the land, it shouldn't be any problem to slow down from that speed, right?
I think that the feelings expressed in this thread are more of a release than an expression of what would happen should any of them meet a bicycle.
Otherwise, we'd be hearing about the hit bikers all the time. I can't remember ever hearing of anyone being hit while riding the Baja on a bike. Can
anyone else?
I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea, it won't kill you (and may save one of those fools) if you gave a bicycle rider a break. That is, so long as
she/he is hugging the side of the road. But for those idiots who want to ride two abreast, please run them over with all due haste, they really pi$$
me off!

I believe in Calif. the law reads that if you have 5 or more vehicles behind you wanting to pass, you MUST pull off the roadway at the first safe spot
and let all pass. If bicyclists would do that, they might find less people mad at them.
