NOT the biggest pot bust. The military is especulating 120 tons, but law enforcement (in both sides of the border) tends to always claim each pot plant produces 1 kilo of dried product wich is untrue. San Quintin is a major producer of pot, has been for years, and the quality is superb.

Besides, most marijuana is grown domestically in the US, yet you never hear about it.

Back in the 60s and 70s...yeah. Seeds, stems...and then some buds :-)

I saw on a Nat Geo program that it is cut using heavy metallic particles to increase its' weight, but making it toxic at the same time. :!:

Well Jesse- as a restaurateur and herb expert don't you think the new Rosarito Farmer's Market should include ALL the regions fresh produce, or is this Pot not grown organically? I asked the lady at the FRAO office in Rosarito this morning and she was less than pleased. (The Farmer's market is weekend afternoons starting at 2pm, not mornings. There's no point selling vegetables until they wilt I guess.)

Mexican soldiers find record marijuana plantation

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/14/us-mexico-drugs-id...

By Lizbeth Diaz
Jul 14, 2011

SAN QUINTIN, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexican soldiers discovered the biggest marijuana plantation ever found in the country in a remote desert surrounded by cactuses, a top army officer said on Thursday.

Soldiers patrolling the area found 300 acres of marijuana plants being tended by dozens of men this week, said General Alfonso Duarte.

He said the crop, which was found in the state of Baja California, about 200 miles/320 km south of San Diego, California, would have yielded about 120 tonnes and was worth about $160 million.

"This is the biggest marijuana plantation we have found in the country," Duarte said.

The plants will be destroyed, he said.

Most of the men tending the crop escaped capture but six suspects were arrested later at a military checkpoint.

The men had dug a well at the barren site and pumped water through hoses to irrigate the plants, which were up to 8 feet tall.

President Felipe Calderon has deployed tens of thousands of troops to the streets to take on powerful drug traffickers shortly after taking office in late 2006.

Violence has spiraled since then, with more than 40,000 people killed across Mexico, hurting support for Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN), which faces an uphill struggle to secure re-election next July.

Mexico is America's top supplier of marijuana and most cocaine consumed in the United States passes through Mexico.

Restrooms are pictured at the biggest marijuana plantation found in Mexico, in San Quintin, about 350 km (220 miles) away from Tijuana, July 13, 2011. Mexican soldiers discovered the plantation in a remote desert surrounded by cactuses, a top army officer said on Thursday. Soldiers patrolling the area found 300 acres (120 hectares) of pot plants being tended by dozens of men on Tuesday, said General Alfonso Duarte. Picture taken July 13, 2011.

Hallan narcocultivo de 120 hectáreas

http://www.elvigia.net/noticia/hallan-narcocultivo-de-120-he...

By Andrés Peráles, El Valle
14.07.2011

Material asegurado:
Un campamento con capacidad para 60 jornaleros
Maquinaria para cultivo
2 pozos
1 planta de energía
Mallasombra
120 toneladas de mariguana en las plantas destruidas
300 elementos castrenses en el operativo

This had to be the first year they were trying to grow a crop. My guess is that the military has inspected every farm, ranch, and village in Baja many times over.

Or was it the payola? But why bust it now?

Or have they known about it for awhile and they were trying to get the head honchos?

The Military also has a barracks above the Popotla fishing village in Rosarito and that hasn't slowed down the human and drug smuggling by panga from there. Short trip from this grow field to Popotla with the Military manning the checkpoints and the Sinaloans run both operations. Just saying...

Who knows? A new sort of pressure from above perhaps. Or...maybe someone didn't get their allowance.
Endless possibilities which we'll never know.

And....migrants? Were they illegal Americans?
