Interesting. Is there some configuration of Firefox that blocks that stuff? Or your antivirus? You by chance have JavaScript disabled?
Do you see the (Flash) Bajabound Auto Insurance ad near the top of the page? |
I have most JavaScript disabled with a AddOn. Using Windows7 anitvirus. Have FF set to block most popups.
Yes I see the BajaBound Insurance ad. that's the only on that ever appears there.

Many users of FF and Chrome are using the Adblock Plus 2.0. add on. Rated as one of the most effective free ad filters available. Does allow display
of the Baja Bound banner and that's not a bad ad all things considered.
http://download.cnet.com/Adblock/3000-11745_4-10461863.html?...
Another freeware program called Advanced System Care, an all-in-one utility is highly rated. There's the annoying pitch to upgrade to the Pro version
after each use but most everyone sticks with the freeware version.
http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_...
I have no business affiliation with the above programs and as always, installation and use is at your own risk.
That said, I use 'em and wouldn't surf without 'em.

I feel deprived-- I get no ads.
Ah, I see what's happening. This customizing of ads we're served is another "service" of Google. It knows where you've been cruising around on the
Web, and serves ads here based on your browsing history elsewhere on sites which subscribe to the service. Everybody here will get a different set of
ads, based on their personal browsing behavior.
The implications of this can be scary: Google is accumulating long-term browsing history of millions of people (without their permission), and the
only thing that's preventing that data from getting into the wrong folks' hands is Googles supposed culture of "Do no harm." |

Wait a minute, are your ads including auto-run video?!
That might be a point of discussion on this site where a lot of folks are running satellite Internet with traffic quotas... |
Yes ,
And I've tried to block it everywhichwayIcanthinkof.
That was my point in a previous thread on bandwith
thanks for paying attention

I'd be interested if you're having actual auto-run video. I'm assuming you have brief animated banners.
Yes, the Google ads are:
- Content specific based upon the page you're looking at on the site and/or your previous search and/or other website viewing history. History is
stored in Google cookie(s).
- Delivered via Javascript.
- Pay per click (only paid when banners are clicked on).
The advertising on the site helps cover the more significant costs of running the forums portion of the site on its own dedicated server (there's no
other site on the machine the forums are on - most websites are hosted on a machine that shares the resources with hundreds of other sites).
I've tried to do my best to be sensitive to the user experience here, utilizing software that loads quickly, as well as an attempt to avoid inundating
users here with an overwhelming amount of advertising noise.
Point of note: Every logged in user here has cookies turned on - as that's what the site software uses to identify each user.

btw... there's a blue triangle/arrow on many of the Google ads that when you mouse over it says "Ad Choices" (or something similar). If you follow
that link, you can edit the categories of ads that you'll see and/or avoid seeing. IOW... you can personalize your ad settings.

I don't believe they're auto run
Just the flash ads that are attached to user searches via cookies.
They are noticable but once loaded don't use that much time/data. Believe me , compared to most websites , this is nothing (in terms of data quantity)
so don't sweat it.
Until of course you clear out again.
I do click on the ones that interest me. And those are the ones that appear most frequently

The ads also take over when running Safari.
It's kind of interesting that the ads that show up are for items I had recently browsed for or looked at on the WWW.
It is sorta like what google does with your browsing.

And Amazon. Go on there to see one item and you're buried with ads for merchandise you've recently shown interest in.
Sometimes I get the feeling that the Amazons are in my house watching me.
