Even though we moved to Zihuatanejo.....

............when dining out here, we still compare Zihuatanejo restaurants to his great place. I hope when the dust settles that all agree there was no foul play. RIP amigo.

this is terrible to read. Ray was such a friend to all. I can't imagine him gone. So sorry.

Sad story....a person can live without eating for several weeks....but not more than several days without water.

Yes, he was a good cook and host and he had another not so positive side to his personality.

I always find it a bit strange that when someone dies, it is time to forget parts of the person. No one is perfect, that is for sure, and the dark sides are just as much a part of the whole as are the positive sides. Just my thoughts.

For his sake, I sure hope it was a heart attack that took him. DEP

I think that uninformed speculation about Ray's death and innuendos about his life are highly inappropriate.

Kurt, You can think what you want, but I knew Ray when he only had a taco stand south of Rosarito, In fact I was the one that encouraged him to check out Mulege. He ran a great restaurant, no question....but to those of us who really knew him his passing is no surprise...he owed money to quiet a few folks including me!! He was abusive to women ( just ask his past wife's) and was "on the lam" from folks in the Palm Springs area when he hit rosarito,..He was not welcome back in the states...I don't believe this was an accident at all. Don't believe me,,,talk to Scotty at his restaurant....He was a charmer for sure but there was a very dark side that not everyone got to see...Not trying to change anyone's mind just providing more insight.....

Because Ray was my friend, I probably heard all the BS too, but for the most part it did not matter a whole lot in terms of my perceptions, and sometimes he would confide to me that he found the negative spin stuff a little surprising and hurtful.
The thing that best explempifies Ray to me was one night while having dinner at the restaurant, I commented that things seemed a little on the slow side and he did not have Licho Ortega playing music at dinner. In a light hearted joke I said that if things were really slow and he needed some musical entertainment, I would be happy to play for free and he could keep the tips. He got a big smile on his face and asked if I would be willing to play and sing for a fundraiser because the little church in the valley needed a new roof after loosing the old roof to a hurricane. I immediately accepted and we had a full house of people from Chivato, San Bruno, San Lucas, Santa Rosalia, and Mulege. He took out enough to pay for the help but no way covered his expenses for the meal and then gave the rest to the church for a roof. Not only did we get a roof put on, but replaced the hymnals and most of the pews as well.
When we had the Yellowtail tournament last year, he was a large donor in the goings on and helped us do dinner and snacks for everything.
So, smaller minds than mine will continue to spin and paint everything as negatively as possible, but I will always have a warm place in my heart for a good friend who always gave me more than he took.

Great euology. Thanks.
Ray is going to be a long time dead so maybe we should leave it at that.

The only opinion that I offered was that a public forum like this is not the place to hash these things out. As to what I think, I will keep that to myself.

There is a horrific rumor going around punta chivato (someone sent me an email) stating that Ray's throat was slit.

in which case, it was not hunger and thirst at all.

nor aheart attack.

and boy, was the newspaper article way off.
