Nothing. Unless a person can't consume sugar. Mestizo Mexicans, because of their indigenous roots have an extremely high chance of becoming diabetic.

Wanna see real action? Feed a bowl full of fresh corn to a type 1 or type 2 diabetic.

And, no one has mentioned fructose. A blend of 2/3rds Stevia and 1/3rd fructose yields a very good tasting sweetener.

Crap! Avoiding mega doses of sodium is hard enough in itself in Mexico , never mind sugar.

Me too!!! You can get Stevia in bulk 12 oz containers and use a tiny measuring spoon (1/4 teaspoon)--------12 oz container of Stevia will sweeten 672 cups of coffee , which is the only thing I ever use sweetener or sugar for.

I buy "NuNaturals" 12 oz container which runs $23.29 a container at the local Health Foods store. That figures out to be .035 cents per cup of coffee--------such a deal!!!!

When in travel-mode, I carry the individual packets of Stevia.

Works for me. No stinkin aspertame poison for ME!!!!

Would anyone choose to eat MRE's if they had another choice?

Compared to the "Rations" of old, MRE's (meals ready to eat) really ain't that bad!!! I ate a lot of them while fighting Forest Fires over the many years. :O

Folks have given MRE's a bad name, which really is not that deserved.

On Edit: sprinkle a little Stevia over them, and yum yum!!!!

Thanks for the informative thread and the conversations it inspired.

There most certainly is but one side to every story: the TRUTH. Variations of it are nothing but lies.

Aspartame is harmless. It is composed of two extremely common amino acids, aspartate and phenylalanine, which are in almost everything you eat already.

Regarding the hype, when claims are made that something causes everything from brain cancer to diabetes, you can be almost sure it is hype.

Conversely, when claims are made that something can cure everything from brain cancer to diabetes, you can be sure it is hype.

By the way, Aspartame is a natural sweetener just like Stevia. It was discovered in the Yellow Lupine in the 1800's.
