Captain? You can run a shrimp/fishing/crab etc. boat from now on and you might well be a pro, but if you don't have that license for how many tons
etc. you'll never be a real captain. Oil field supply, crew boats, fishing, charter, on and on you've got to have the paper work to be able to take
the wheel.

I doubt many of the mexican panganeers give a sheet about an official title of captain that we have NOB. I don't see the importance on anything under
say a 100 footer.

Out to sea in a panga...no sight of land...no instruments...not even a compass...but he always got us home directly....just pointed the bow and never
needed to make a correction.

i feel your pain, as a retired pilot of big aircraft(747 md-11, dc10) i cringe a bit when single engine pilots refer to them selves as "captain" i
worked long and hard for that title...that being said, i have yet to meet a pangero that referred to himself as captain.

Pacifico,
Don't know any guys with 182's that refer to selves as "captain"..... Nor do any small boat owners I know.
Maybe I just hang with a less pretentious crowd?

...YES.....it's incredible the lengths that native fishers can go to provide for their families....and the only recognition they seem to occasionally
get from us is when they get lost to the sea....''where's my sushi!?''

I can certainly see your point of those that call themselves Captain, but after witnessing plenty of airline Captains exhibit questionable stick and
rudder skills, I can also question their calling themselves pilots! Maybe systems managers would be more accurate. Thousands of hours on autopilot
after receiving weather on a tablet or lap top, etc. as compared to some of the single engine flying done by many pilots is a similar comparison, IMO.
Difficult to paint any group with a broad brush. Retired pilot of single engine
planes. (C-182, C-206, C-T210, C-185, owned and operated)
