A huge percentage of the world is accustomed to squat toilets. From Eastern Europe on. In many tourist friendly cities such as Istanbul, you may find bathrooms with both the porcelain throne with a squat toilet in the stall adjacent. It's a cultural thing.

My beef with bathrooms in Baja is where I find toilets that are inoperable. For years we have encountered the worst situation in the ejido run Pemex at Colonet. Disgusting.

Most of the newer Pemex stations have mini marts and make more profit from inside than outside. By and large, they have very clean, well-equiped bathrooms.

Just heard from a reliable source that Antonio is going to begin work on a restaurant in three months or so. Looking forward to more options.

It took a year to remodel 2 small bathrooms, how long will it take to build a restaurant?

My source tells me the widening of the road by three meters caused all plans/permits to be resubmitted/reapproved. Thus, construction should commence in three months. We'll see what happens:light:

The bathrooms were part of the Pemex station, and the stiff regulations and lack of flexibility for local conditions were the reason for the delays. Antonio does everything by-the-book and legit.

The restaurant (last I heard it would be a taco stand, with 'parador' services, like when the highway opened) will not be in the Pemex portion of Antonio's business... Unless things have changed...

I call total BS on that explanation DK. I don't doubt for a minute that Antonio is a good guy and I appreciate what he has done with the ambulance service for the area. The bathrooms at the ER Pemex were among the worse in Baja before the remodel, fixing them up was essential if they intended to keep up with the newer stations in the region. A project of that magnitude should have taken no more than a week at most if you had any construction experience or cared about the needs of your customers. The notion that "regulations" held up the project is a feeble attempt at explaining away pi$$ poor planning and lack of interest in the needs of your customers(IMO).

I already know what you are going to say: "there is a bathroom at the Baja Cactus that the customers can use". This is true, I actually tried it once (did you?). After walking a considerable distance over to the motel I was greeted by several others waiting in the small lobby of the motel to use a small one hole bathroom with a door opening to the lobby, not very pleasant for bathroom users or motel customers/employees.

I have and will continue to stop by from time to time and drop off a donation for the ambulance service but don't buy gas there any more, the Los Pinos station is much nicer and only 30 miles up the road. I wish Antonio success in his restaurant venture.

Dave, Antonio is a very hard working and honest man. I have no reason not to believe him. Because I am retelling it in simple language may not do justice to the actual bureaucratic nightmare he went through. It had nothing to do with the work, but getting the approval from Mexico City (here is an example of socialism dictating from thousands of miles away what a businessman can do). As I recall, it had to do with Antonio wanting more stalls for the woman's side and presented the reasons why (ridiculous that he needed to). The Pemex business is a franchise that is strictly controlled by Mexico City.

Antonio told me basically what DK is saying. I have no reason to not believe Antonio

As to buying gas from the very charitable and community minded Rodriguez boys at Los Pinos.....

all I can say is "God bless you" cuz I sure cannot....

(if you think the old Baja Cactus rest rooms were bad, why don't you make a little side trip down and visit some of the Los Pinos camps- dare you!!!)

Wasn't going to enter the bathroom fray, but I have toured the Los Pinos facilities. You should to. There are no camps. I did go into a portapottie in the field and it was clean with a wash station outside. Went into the facilities in the packing house and they were way better that Antonio's old bathrooms (have not seen the new pee holes). I suspect your comment was more directed at them because of the info (and misinfo) directed at them since the strike. Buy the way, ever visited the San Quintin museum funded and run by the Rodriquez family.

Now it's bathroom revues...Good grief, as if religion and politics weren't enough?

Here's a photo collage in post from 3 years ago about the nice new construction at Baja Cactus Pemex. And I always hit what I aim at...

We are spoiled these days. Bathrooms have changed a little from back in the day on the Baja Road. Then you just found a way...and didn't make a big deal out of it.

Worrying about restrooms in Mexico this much makes me think life must be pretty good. If restrooms are this big of a deal, that is.
