After so many years of seeing signs advertising Superior beer on bars in Mexico, I finally tried some last winter. I was surprised how good it was.

Where is Baja Spellchecker?

It's Negra Modelo and Nochebuena (one word)

Possibly the only brewery in Mexico founded by Germans that kept a German name is Kloster's in Monterrey. I've never seen it in cans or bottles. It was available on draft in Mexico City, Monterrey and other cities in Eastern and Central Mexico.

BTW, I sure wish some adventurous braumeister with a few bucks would come and reopen the Monarch's Rest brewpub on Main St. in Yuma. A Brit named Ian built and opened it a few years ago but went belly up. Such a pity. He had great wheat beer and a mean Scottish style stout he called Kilt Tilter. It's been sitting there empty, all the vat's etc. ready to go again, waiting for the right investor...

Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe has "Kilt Lifter" Scottish ale - killer stuff. And lots of cute AZ State girls - but I digress . . . ;D

Is Bohemia still around? I liked that one.

If beers were judged by their commercials, the top spot would have to go to Corona--beautiful beaches, no talk, waves swishing in, ambience that says "Mexico" [ except, of course, that there's no too-loud music]. Too bad the brew doesn't measure up to the ads.

No Respect.

Poor Corona Extra. Nobody likes it. I guess they'll just have to settle for being the biggest seller. You have to wonder why a beer that's so unappreciated sells so well.

This is another chance for the Elitists to show how much more perceptive they are. Their taste is SO much better than the commoners.

The best beer is the one that "You" like. There have been periods in my life when my favorite was Budweiser, Coors and Heineken. Right now it's MGD in El Norte and Corona Extra in Baja, but I haven't found a Mex Beer I Wouldn't drink.

I think the BEST Beer I ever tasted (from Anywhere) was Dortmunder Union.

Not sure of the status right now but I'll look into it. I know Ian had a development loan from the City before he filed for bankruptcy. I guess the numbers didn't work before but with the new Pivot Point Riverfront development and remake of Main St., things could pick up in the near future.

Get it fresh...

...Most brews don't age well...There's really nothing like the taste of new batch of your favorite micro brew...

... Or perhaps the wonderful liquid that's sold at the take-out window of the Pacifico Brewery in Mazatlan! If you're ever in Mazatlan, get over there and pick up a fresh-brewed case...toss a few well-worn bottles in a five gallon bucket of ice, let the ice do it's job...uncap a long-neck and ENJOY the feeling as that icy elixir trickles down your parched throat on a moisture laden evening as you watch the sun drop from view!

...could be argued it's better than sex, and lasts longer, too!:O

According to my clock...anytime is \'BAJA TIME\' & as Jimmy Buffett says,

Why Corona sells well?

Thought I made that clear: those super commercials. That goes for Bud too.

Brewery owner: "You know vot makes a grrreat bier?"

McKenzies: "The hops?" "The best barley?"

Owner: "Nein, nein. Iss all chust pee-colored vater. Marketink! Marketink, dot's vot makes a grrreat bier!"

But....................

While there is no doubt that Good Marketing will result in a higher rate of Initial sales, it would seem unlikely that a disappointed customer would Continue to purchase a product when so many others are available.

Perhaps my mind isn't aged or simplistic enough to grasp the concept.

While high-end supermarkets in urban areas offer a plethora of micro-brews, you obviously haven't noticed the monopoly of Anheuser-Busch which has taken over a majority of gas station convenience stores with exclusive distribution contracts. If it ain't Bud, Bud Light or Michelob, fuhgeddaboutit.

Update on Monarch's Rest... It is now owned by the Quechan (They have a casino across the river). They have not as yet announced plans to reopen, maybe they are looking for a brewmaster. It is also said that Chretine's is negotiating to buy it as their present location sucks almost as much as their food. For non-Yumans, Chretine's has the absolute worst so-called "Mexican Food" West of the Mississippi. This would be tantamount to a sacrilege. Even worse if someone pulled out the brewery equipment for a "regular" restaurant.
