gnukid, and others,

I'm not sure why I had that strong reaction. Maybe it was partly grammatical, and also partly philosophical. But I think, now, that it was mostly intuitive. The way the request for the information was stated, it turned me way OFF. I could dissect the original post word by word and perhaps come up with a rational explanation of why I had problems with it, but why waste more time on this? Apparently, everybody else also had some problem, because besides the anecdote about the proctologist's table, I see no other contribution for this project…

Bad comparison.

"The Yukon". "The Mohave". "The Sawtooth". "The Sahara".

Maybe it's just a perceptual detail. "The Baja" is not a state. It is a peninsula and a region.

Hate to be a nit picker Larry....however .... 'The

Sahara Desert" is not a state either, but a region ..

Not that I care,

After years of hearing my beloved San Francisco referred to as "Frisco" I have become pretty numb to lazy language.

The Baja / Baja .........

What are they but nicknames. Contractions for convenience. "Baja" is more traditional and has wider use. "The Baja" is relatively new and still widely resisted.
So what. The question becomes, "Which is most or least correct?" Well, neither is either.

Come to think of it, all of the above choices seem tolerable when one considers the possibility of a new faction wanting to call Baja California, "The Lower."

Interrectual? Somehow I think that goes along with the proctology angle.

Yup! Larry is either employing the Asian pronounciation of the word or else he is taking this string to a very dark place.:O

Dennis,
Climb up on your etymologist's table.:lol:

Once I mentioned to the bartender at Los Arcos in La Paz that the Mexican congress was voting to maybe change the name of Baja California Sur to Benito Juarez. The bartender said he didn't like the idea. I said "what's the difference?" He told me he was born in La Paz, liked the state's name just fine like it was. He said "what's your name?" I said "George" He said why don't I just start calling you Larry?"

Not a misspelling....not even buggy.

Look it up. It's a very wordy definition.
