Mood: Have Baja Fever

[*] posted on 3-28-2008 at 07:03 PM

Pick and choose what you want to read or interpret my friends...

The question was about taking fireworks INTO Baja... The truth answer is they ARE legal in Baja... but generally not allowed to be set off in towns.

Most here have used this question to promote their hate of the traditional freedom to set off fireworks in Mexico... and to confuse my posting the 'other side' of an argument to get you to think.

Like you (most of you), I don't want to hear them on a regular basis either... But, I (or you) have no right to change a freedom or tradition because of your/ my personal feelings... You need a majority and a rule of law.

Can some of you just read and THINK about other ideas? Don't jump on the messenger for opening your eyes... Good night.

Get over it.... I live close to a place where fireworks go off almost every night. Big deal..... planes fly low over the coast..... holy chiite....what a travesty.... people blast music in their cars.... exceed the speed limit..... OH MY GOD! There are people smoking on our beaches and it is OUTLAWED! They oughta be thrown in jail! I can't even have a beer on my beach anymore...... I would celebrate someone launching a few bottle rockets! Hell, I've done it myself, amazingly enough me being in the business I am....
I hope to *** I never get so righteous that I can't tolerate a few fireworks.....

Nice picture, Frank. If you had peace, quiet and a bit less government, they'd probably raise your taxes.

Thank you! Gringolandia will arrive sooner or later to Baja and at this rate...... David, sometimes you do have a clue! Kidding you of course but with this you are spot on imo.

I think most of us have enough sense to stay away from them. If not, you party-poopers should stay secure.

I wonder how many from PNW and points east feel about their fireworks. California is a bad place for all but the expert shows. That's because they start fires so easy, not cuz a few nincompoops hurt themselves. Maybe it's vogue to not like them there. You know like Patch inferred. Try to have a beer and walk your dog on the beach while picnicing with a campfire going. You'll probably go to jail and pay a $1000 fine. Up here you would look odd behaving as you would there.
Aw how I love the difference in that mindset here. Beaches are actually considered a great place to recreate. Go figure.

You should see the celebration folks have , it's almost like they still have civil liberties and are permitted to express themselves, beer and all.

I usually don't, but now, I will have to buy some on the way down just to pee someone off. My kids always enjoyed a few bottle rockets and fire crackers part of the fun of going to Baja. For some reason I thought they were illegal in southern Baja because of all the thached roofs.

Personal Decisions

This is just one of many areas in which someone exercising their "Rights" regarding personal decisions and personal responsibility to other non-participants brings up the question of how offensive behavior should be addressed.

The Golden Rule which I have followed all of my adult life is that, when someone "FIRST" commits such an act, then ANYTHING that I might do in response (Legal, Illegal, Underhanded, Sneaky, Irritating, Harmful or otherwise) is fully justified. Discretion prevents me from citing specific examples, some of which are quite amusing, others distressful.

Over the years, it has worked quite well for me, but others may address those events differently. That's their decision.

I'll go with mine.

I agree if the fireworks are legal then go ahead and use them in a safe way. I have been in San Felipe on New Years Eve and there is alot of fireworks going off almost all night long. I do have to admit it is a little annoying to have them set off when you are sound asleep. But it was my choice to go there knowing the firework would be going off all night long.My family and I have even got some of the big bottle rockets and set them off and enjoyed the show,But not to late as to wake people up.:no::no:

Just take the fireworks to your local fire station and turn them in. If you take them to Baja you may have more problems than you can imagine.

Marmeon - we just got back from a trip down to Guerrero Negro. I bought fireworks in Ensenada and had them in the car when we were searched by the military outside Sn Quintin. They found the bag of fireworks, looked in and put them back without saying a word so I don't think it is a big deal.

For those who are about to launch into another round of concerns about the many evils of fireworks I will just say that we only lit them off when there was no one around (deserted beach at 9pm with no houses in the area) and I made sure my kids picked up all the papers. I totally agree with the comments about respecting other peoples right to peace and quiet and the litter from fire crackers is a real eye sore. I also agree with those who have said that it is a grand tradition as I remember doing them with my dad when I was a kid.

I've been wanting to know about the same thing. But everyone seems to be referring to the awful fireworks that are shot off from local vendors. I pass by an Indian reservation in Nevada on the way to Utah that sells kits that rival some local professional shows. I'm not talking about the dud mortars and the annoying big bangs. These are beautiful multi stage plumes. I'm talking the real deal for only a couple hundred bucks for a wonderful show. So to ask the original question. Are they legal to import??

That's the frustrating thing about law in Mexico. Nobody seems to know. It's all subject to interpretation at the moment. Of course, you could ask a lawyer but, he probably won't know either so you could pay him to do his homework and it still won't mean much because two blocks away from his office, the law is different and you're right back where you started.
Stealth and common sense are the law, it seems.

Mood: Enjoying Life with Wife In Mexico, Easy on The Easy

I have been with friends that have taken fireworks across and Mexican customs did nothing when they looked in the trunk, so it appears legal but may also be the luck of the draw. Fireworks are fun for those shooting them off but those with animals have to go searching for them when these fireworks go off. I have shot off my share of fireworks and remember the big BBQs in Texas with plenty of them. I never thought about the animals like dogs who just go wild when they go off. If you could be aware before it would be one thing but unfortunately you never know what is going to happen. I had my boxer take off and get lost for two days and finally found her but she had been hit by a car and her leg was broken. Had to have her operated on, a pin put in her leg, and had to work with her for over 8 months to get the leg back to where it was functional. Just my gripe about fireworks but I know they are fun for kids to watch and others to enjoy but care should be taken, so beach areas not close to houses best to enjoy them. Later, bajafun777

Those that remember the story about 'Inky' the lost dog we found between Santa Ynez and Mision Santa Maria... and how we saved her, brought her with us to Camp Gecko, and during the sky rocket show, she took off and wasn't seen again... Dogs hate the explosions!
