First of all, as for the comment about Baja being backward versus the mainland, it depends upon where you are and from what perspective. If you end up in La Paz, you will be in a place that is anything but backward. It's a vibrant city.

That said, since Don Gus was resurrected on this thread, allow me to share why I wouldn't recommend it. Granted, last we stayed there was some five years ago, and since then a couple of newer hotels have opened (Cowboy, Caracoles). Anyway, we found Don Gus to be VERY basic as far as amenities, but what was surprising, was that on their 12 inch TV, they had a hard core porno channel. No kidding. Don't know if that was the result of pranksters, or what. Personally, I was not offended. However, I could understand how some might be. And, I would also wonder what specific clientele they aim for with this offering.

I am really surpised. Virginia and I have stayed there several times since it opened. Never had any difficulties, Resonable and the Breakfast Menu was good.

When the malmarino got overloaded during Whale Season, we went there.

Yeah...they do. Lay off Skeet. He' been around here a long time, unlike you, and we appreciate as well as understand the man. If you don't like his opinions, keep it to yourself.

I understand, Skeet. Actually, when last we stayed at Don Gus, there were two van loads of whale watchers being put up there for the night by the tour operator. Maybe we just got lucky and had a "special" TV.

Either way, I do believe that Cowboy and Caracoles offer a superior experience.

Love it

This thread is great. Truly a pleasure to read some excellent recommendations peppered with the unique Nomad delivery. I love it - and kissme now knows that you guys (and gals) care and are concerned that she have a great trip to enjoy all that we enjoy when visiting Baja.

What the heck, even a dance with an old geezer like Skeet would contribute greatly to her experience in understanding who populates Baja.

Hopefully DK wont chime in and ruin all the fun.

All I know is I was very particular, very careful when I chose the handle "Osprey". I know better than to use a provocative name. Even down here, when I go to Cabo, San Jose or La Paz, just walking down the street, minding my own business, shopping, whatever, I can feel eyes, the hungry eyes of the young woman checking, assessing, wandering. You just have to be sooooo careful.

Thought to add Osprey's DMV shot, to add credence to his statement.

Go ahead Van, make fun. You don't know what it's like, practically being stalked all the time. Not being able to go to the beach, the gym without them coming on, brushing up against me. I just can't talk it anymore.

I drink to get through the evening -- after that terrible feeling of being violated (in spirit if not physically) by their constant attention I take a hot shower, scrub the filthy remnants of their prying eyes off my skin and then I go back to the bottle. What else is there?
