UPDATE

Man shot at border was wanted in ColoradoBy Karen Kucher, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

Monday, April 19, 2010 at 1:28 p.m.

SAN DIEGO — A Colorado man shot in the shoulder by federal officers at the U.S. border Saturday was wanted in connection with at least 30 purse-snatch robberies in Colorado.

Richard Cress, 54, will be arraigned in San Diego federal court Monday afternoon on a charge of assaulting a federal officer.

In March, police in Wheat Ridge, Colo., a suburb of Denver, identified Cress as a suspect in a string of purse-snatch robberies that began in January, including cases with victims ranging in age from 70 to 95 years old. The robber would target women who left purses on their front seat as they pumped gas or loaded groceries or other items into their car. The robber would often drive close to the car, reach in and grab the purse and take off.

Wheat Ridge police spokeswoman Lisa Stigall said six of the purse-snatch cases occurred in Wheat Ridge and the rest were in 10 surrounding towns. Police issued a warrant for his arrest in March.

"It is a relief," Stigall said. "We were really hoping that someone was going to see him before somebody got injured. In our cases he did seem to prey on the elderly gals and some of them are pretty sparky and they would try to fight back and grab their purse. It was a matter of time before someone was going to get injured."

Cress was shot in the shoulder by federal officers Saturday morning as he sped toward exit lanes at the border crossing after ignoring an order to pull over into a secondary inspection area, authorities said. Cress was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe, which had been reported stolen in Colorado Springs on March 1 and had stolen California license plates on it.

As Cress drove into a lane enclosed by cement barriers he rammed a vehicle in front of him in an attempt to make it to the freeway, San Diego homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

Agents reached the driver's door and tried to stop him. But Cress put the SUV in reverse and drove south at about 30 mph, police said. Two agents shot at Cress to prevent him from hitting more cars, Rooney said. Cress was struck by one round and crashed into a barricade. He was treated for his injuries at UCSD Medical Center.

The names of the agents have not been made public. One has been with the agency for three years and the other for seven, police said.

"Trying to ram himself across the border in that way is kind of a crazy ending to it," Stigall said.
