I totally agree. The latest so called political thread should have been in off-topic where most of us don't venture.

It was not an issue where it is easy to agree to disagree---because it was not just a political issue, but it said a lot about who people are---about their basic humanity.

I know I was accused of being bitter, but as I stated, I was seriously more disappointed by some, and disgusted by others. I can and do differ politically with friends on political issues and can agree to disagree, but this was not about a policy.

Off-topic is there for a reason, and perhaps more threads should be moved there.

Once I see a thread going political or nasty I quit reading it. I don't know why this so difficult to do by those offended by the content. I just let the unhappy people go after each other and read the other stuff.

I don't post as much as in the past and when I do its usually just a couple of lines to poke fun at something or someone. I don't remember anybody being nasty to me or me to them in the past. I learned to get along with people in kindergarten.....maybe they don't teach that any more.....dt

Well, there you go again. Some of us did not get a chance at kindergarten, some (like me) had to go twice. Now you're gonna make a thing out of that.

I don't argue politics (environmental, racial, party affiliation) or religion it's a losing argument everytime. I first joined BN to get information about venturing further south of the border than I had ever done before. I was given informative answers to questions and I have since made 3 trips (no trip reports because of the political comments made) to the tip and back since joining.

I like reading the trip reports, the offroading , the fishing reports, the real estate discussions and enjoy the pictures..other than that I don't participate much on this forum;

REASON is I don't like the way that many members are so judgemental..An example would be..If a member asks a questions and it is answered with pictures and links to help the member understand the answer and you don't like the person that posted the answer Why do you have to Blast them for trying to help? You Don't Have to jump on the person's shiat that answered if you don't agree but you Do Have to offer up a different answer.. To Much Negative Energy and Flaming of others goes on here....

I really enjoy the website, don't visit as much anymore I think Better Moderation is needed IMHO...:cool:

Ok experience with lots of internet groups (yahoo groups) has taught me that these types of boards are not democracies. They are slumbering autocracies or dictatorships. If you slip into nasty personal attack or behave in a way in which you normally would not were you face to face with a person then you are warned or booted! I personally have never seen a group as unmoderated or nasty (at times) as this one!
That said I have seen numerous great and helpful threads! Personally I was very touched by the offers of help during our stranding at the ranch and when we had to make the decision to put our dog down!
I've gotten to the point where I just ignore at lot of the crap here and sift to the threads of interest. If I were listowner there would be about 20-30 less people here! If you want to be nasty have the guts to do it face to face in a bar or someplace like that!

rule no. one is "don't feed the troll!"

Dennis, Thank You for starting this thread, as I am sure Doug is following it. Will be interesting to see what comes of this.

It will be interesting, but like other forums, this one belongs to someone and as with other forums, it is what the owner wants it to be.

Sometimes threads are moved, sometimes posts are deleted, etc., but what happens is up to the owner.

We could disagree about how the forum should be run, what is appropriate, how it should be moderated, speculate on if people would say the same things in person or not, agree or disagree as to if evey one should just get along and pretend they like everyone------ on and on until the cows come home-----doesn't really matter.

This forum is what it is----it is Doug's forum.

We've lost a lot of serious voices here and it's a shame because I feel many of them have gone their way as a result of the atmosphere here drifting away from the point, being BAJA.
Other reasons have been the "nastiness" involved in discussions here. That's a result of Doug's permissiveness, but bless him for that.

Soooo...Let's hear what you Nomads have to say on this issue. Point fingers and lay blame where it belongs.
Let's find the infection that has stiffled actvity here and get things back to normal.

I offer myself as a place to start....I know Ken and Roger will have something to say on this, or not.
If others have opinions about me, this is a good place to voice them.
Civility is yours to consider.

Go for it, Nomads.
Voice your bich right here, right now. Let's hear what we think of each other.
Familiarity will bring us closer together.

What would JR say to this invitation ????

when i first came to this forum, i was so happy that i had someone to ask questions, since i was a newcomer and needed to know some things about living in baja...then the ridicule, insults, cruelty. yes, being thin-skinned, i no longer felt a need to be beaten down, so why post?

actually, there were a few sweet people who wrote to me privately to apologize for the treatment that i received. and even was invited to meet some of them. and was treated so graciously. this was a plus. i had even planned a pot luck where when i finally arrived, we could meet one another...so, that's where i'm at. even met this wonderful couple who i correspond with quite often and made some new friends.

so, THANK U, dennis! i see u now in a whole new view. and i like it.

Isn't this thread Off-Topic:?::lol::lol:

Seriously, there have been many excellent posts following up on Dennis' remarks.

If I was understanding what "legs" posted, it is true that perhaps the most egregious offender has been dealt with for now. That said, I'm glad my job is not moderator. It's gotta be a thankless and difficult job to maintain a balance between boring and brawling. In all the time I've been around here, I'm sure I offended some. It was not intentional. (Well, may a couple of times) Similarly, I have been the recipient of remarks that I was not pleased about. But, at the end of the day, this community is like a family. We're not always going to agree with, or get along with everyone. But we all have a certain bond. That bond can be found in the title of the web site.

BN turns into a "big fun time" about happy hour. About that time a few dominant posters come out and ruin the fun. Cluck, cluck...

"I've been collaborating online since way before the Internet and historically the general rule of behavior has been to avoid things online that one wouldn't say face to face. It's human to slip occasionally, but the level of constant intentional incivility on this particular forum is downright discouraging."

No comment about the level of incivility, but I have to wonder just how you could be collaboratng online before the internet. Sounds just a tad difficult.:lol:
