Well, I am happy to report that Cristina and I made it out alive after racing in the Baja 500 yesterday.

Driving up and back to Ensenada yesterday we traveled those parts of Hwy 1 where the 500 was on pavement with a score of racers. A bit nerve wracking to say the least...

This was the first race I've missed in some time. I sucummed to the "sense of duty" and stayed to work. I am a lead technician on the "Smart Grid" and our projects are overwhelming us. Just got a sweet offer on contracting back when I "pull the plug" That will pay for plenty of bait and bullets.
It was sure nice to have the race audio running in the background with Weatherman calling "Richard Craniums" what they are! Happy for Jesse James finishing his first race with out crashing or breaking. My wife will never forgive him for his transgressions...

Amazing how you see the same names appear over and over in a period of time. Although so many enter the race, it looks like the first across the finish line is limited to a very small group year after year...

Josh (our son at Stewart's RaceWorks) was happy to hear that the Class 6 truck he prepped for the race won... and another prepped at Raceworks in the Trophy Truck class finished in 5th place.

Well, my little boy survived another one. They had a pretty good run without any major problems. 5th place class 22, 14th overall motorcycle. Not bad for 2 over 40 guys and a 55 year old fart.

I hate the Baja races any more, I worry about my family and friends. I usually go in a support role as it's been a few years since they have asked me to be a rider on the team. I'm physically sick the day of the race worrying about my son. He has said he was through racing in Baja several times before but I guess this is his crack.....maybe there is a 12 step program that I can get him into......

I went to the San Felipe 250 with them a couple of months ago and actually did some prerunning....I still have the Xrays around here somewhere. I didn't go to the 500, me and my sweetheart decided to go to Bahia Asuncion and soak up some "ubication" instead.....dt

DT, racing is like Baja the pull is sometimes greater than you think. You think about all that could go wrong but once you are riding you don't think about that. You only think of what you are doing then. As a dad it is really hard not to think of your son when he's out there and what could happen.

The winners are asscociated with racing programs that pay attention to the smallest of details. Big bucks are put into everything related. There are a few drivers and riders that just know how to win. Larry Ragland use to say "it's being Baja smart".

Until the Sportsman classes came along the little guys with little money had to run with the big boys so to speak. They still do in some classes. The OA winners will come from the high dollar classes. To build a Trophy Truck and run a 5 race SCORE series cost between $500,000 to a million dollars. It probably cost Honda close to $100,000 a year to support the two bikes in the SCORE series and that doesn't include paying anyones salary. Just figure the cost of the race bikes and maybe pre-runner bikes, spare parts, including wheels, setting up the pits with all the personnel, food lodging etc. It's not cheap.

David,
Glad your son made it safely....and that you and J. soaked up some excellent ubication...

I have heard that guys around your age can get injured just riding a "Gentleman's Ride" in Baja...

Ivan Stewart and Toyota PPI did really good and look at the money that went into that program. I think it really paid off for Toyota.

Did I tell you I pre-ran from Laguna Salada to Borrego in my Toyota last Thursday. No problems. The frontend needs more clearance, the skid plate did scrap a few times. Got passed by one bike, two buggies and four trucks. The arroyos were really soft sand.
