Hello the board, I just got home. I've got some reading to do to catch up. Did very well in the bell ringing department today. Folks are feeling very generous towards the Salvation Army this year.

BRB,

Time to ad some meat to this thread to get it off of life support!

A little while ago I went around the corner to Fidelia Boutique. Earlier today I noticed that they had black footless tights in the window-- a practical and stylish addition to a Loreto winter wardrobe. An elegant middle aged woman showed me the selection, I made my choice as there were three different weights and materials to choose from. I paid her, and as she gave me my change I complimented her on her beautiful nails. They were quite long, painted with subtle but glowing color, and on each one was an exquisite tiny blossom. She thanked me, and then told me they are very difficult to maintain, because what she really loves to do is fish, and she handlines. As I said, she was muy elegante, with perfectly cut and coifed hair, subtly highlighted, just enough make-up to accent her features, dressed in black, with very tasteful gold jewelry.

My jaw dropped, I'm sure, as I said REALLY! You are a handliner?? And I went on to tell her how beautiful I think this ancient way of fishing is-- como un baile. She sid exactly to fish this way es muy emocianante, as you feel every little move the fish makes, and you are directly connected to him. She showed me a scar that ran from the tip of her index finger to the heel of her hand, and she told me how she likes to cut her mackerel for bait, and wants no help with any part of fishing from her husband. A panga captain who was shopping with his wife joined the conversation, as the lady was very knowlegeable as to where the fish were-- how big, what kind at many spots close to shore, as she and her husband fish out of Puerto Escondido in a small aluminum boat with a 6 hp motor. I mentioned that my husband loves to fish, but I don't, but I do like to go out, and I to make bait. This caused much laughter. She said that it was sad that the women in Loreto never go out on the water, and have no interest in fishing. I mentioned that I have often heard that years ago a person had only to walk a few feet into the sea, reach down, and grab a good dinner. She said ay, si, en anos pasados fueron tantos peces, estaba increible! And she talked about the nets that people put out now, and how she reported one recently, but the men don't want to hear about it-- they don't care. But she knows her spots, and how to fish, and never comes home empty handed, but often with a damaged nail.

Oh dear me!! I'm afraid I've hijacked this thread:wow::dudette: It's all true-- every word of it.

Paula,
That was a fantastic hijack story! I wonder if she wears yellow rubber gloves? It seems to me that it would be darned near impossible to keep a good manicure and really fish.

There is the trick of scraping your nails across a bar of Ivory soap prior to getting dirty with it when you garden, but I don't think it would work with fishing.

I love to fish too, and just give my nails up to the fishing gods every time.

Paulina,

She told me all about what she wears for fishing, winter and summer, and that she always carries a bag of dry clothes because she fell off of the boat once in the winter time, but she didn't mention gloves.

I was a potter for 25 years or so, so I've kept my nails short and undecorated (but not my toenails!) You can't throw pots with gloves on, and they bother me whether scrubbing, grouting, or gardening. I'm always amazed to see what some women can do in spite of a pretty manicure.
