I stayed in San Felipe after a moto ride to La Ventana. It was beautiful, quiet and peaceful. I felt no intimidation at all. The Malecon was empty but I'm cool with that. I don't get the fear.

Well a policeman was assanated there yesterday. But I guess that's not intimidating nor reason to be fearful.

Lots of places are, until they're not. One's anecdotal experience doesn't negate reasons for people being fearful.

Baja Window

Anecdotal for 40 years. I have more anxiety in Alta California than Baja. Not trying to pick a fight but when I see little girls and boys running around at sunset in "blah blah Mexican town" it reminds me of my youth. I guess I'm getting old. I've had bad days but there is always someone to help. Anecdotal is a great word so thanks for that. But I promise surabi, my experience has been positive and I've never felt fear when I'm south of the border towns.

Sorry to sidetrack.

Still a checkpoint first stop sign after the arches going into town. Scary full garb military with machine guns, lots of them most days.

MANY reports on TB from SF locals who have noticed an increased presence of Guardia Nacional and the military since the cartel video.

I guess the GN and the military are pearl-clutchers and boomers, too.......

Oh wait. it was all FAKE NEWS! They were duped as well!!!!

Translation of the headline and first paragraph:

San Felipe Citizen Report

COWARDLY ATTACK TAKES LIFE OF OFF-DUTY MUNICIPAL POLICE OFFICER

"A Municipal Police Officer who was heading home after finishing his shift was killed by unknown individuals on the night of Sunday, January 5, 2025.
The response of the police in the port was once again ineffective, since up to this moment there is no news of people detained in relation to the fatal attack."

This is someone posting on Facebook. I haven't yet found a report of this from a recognized news organization.

I have also had 95% positive experiences all over Mexico for 50 years. But when someone puts out warnings about an area because of recent bad events there, they are just trying to help others stay safe by being informed. It doesn't really add anything to the conversation for others to say "Oh, I was just there, it's fine" just because we didn't see or experience bad stuff there. And it's sort of a slap in the face to those who posted about crimes happening there.

Of course, that's different than correcting misinformation or unsubstantiated rumors that would scare people unnecessarily if we know for sure there's no truth to it.

Consider the source. Anyone putting out ''warnings'' about ''bad events'' may or may not be a seasoned traveler. Info may or may not be first hand. I don't believe the media, FB, Talk Baja, LA Times, San Diego Tribune. I will believe Bajazly because he lives there.

Bad hombres breeze into San Felipe, shoot the place up, and are gone tomorrow. Safe/dangerous today? Opinions vary.

I've been stopped once in 60 years driving Baja. I expect to be stopped every time I'm on the road, though. Maybe it's luck but think luck can run out. I prepare for that mentally.

I've never felt fear in Baja. Concern, nervous, on guard, oh yeah.

I'd say for anyone who fears things, don't go South.

I stay outside of SF when there, and am not out at night.

Results vary, always. Take your chances. Be positive.

Not sure what your msg is. If bad hombres are breezing into town to shoot up the place, then sounds like things are lawless anarchy, eh? Or maybe bajazly says they are only shooting blanks or rubber bullets?

For sure, someone who actually lives in an area is a good person to listen to, unless they are one of those gringoes who speak no Spanish, so pass on gringo rumors, or think their gardener is a great source of accurate information.

I'd say that people who are easily fearful should not just not travel south, they should not leave home. ;D. I find it weird that people go out and about in their own hometown up north without fear even if some violent incident took place there, yet are terrified to go somewhere in Mexico where the same thing took place.

if it takes an entourage of bodyguards to feel safe you might want to stay home.

I am at Pete's Camp right now talking to some of the locals. No one seems too concerned about this issue.
