Playliist that will take me to Mexico whenever I am driving around town or drinking a beer in the back yard.
I will start the list
Jimmy Messina "Mexico Minute", yes I know that Brooks and Dunn did it originally, but I like Jimmy's version. |
Ok, I have compiled all of the music that everyone provided to my question regarding a playlist.
I am happy to tell you that I have created a play list at rhapsody.com
if you go to playlist central and do a search for www.bajanomads.com you will find the play list of most of the tunes that everyone recommended.
enjoy
PS, Rhapsody is a awsome service for music.

A few songs:
Mexican Radio- Wall of Voodoo (I hear the talking of the DJ/Can't understand just what does he say?)
Carmelita-Warren Zevon
Pancho & Lefty--Emmy Lou via Townes van Zandt
Victor Jara-Arlo Guthrie
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues-Dylan
and while it does not mention Mexico per se, the best driving song I feel of all time is Streets With No Name by U2...especially in an area like south
of Catavina where 1 opens up and you really feel like you're free at last! Turn it up to 11.

It's really easy.
Just go to http://www.rhapsody.com/home.html
Look for the "Search for Music" text box.
Enter "Slayer"
Hit the "Track" button
Choose the track "Raining Blood"
Press Play
And that's all there is to it.

Yeah but we need some more actual Mex music here. Howsabout...
Ana Gabriel - Album- La Reina Canta a Mexico. ( ranchera )
Fito Olivares - pretty much anything ( cumbia )
Somebody mentioned Willie and Lobo, and they are really good. They only play instrumentel music and their style is described as "Gypsy Boogaloo".
Favorite albums are Siete and Wild Heart.

This is the best...I love this song...It is on my Mexico playlist. I went to Rhapsody....typed in "Mexico" and listened to pieces of hundreds of
songs to build my list.
Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!

Cumbia Callera
I am not trying to hijack the thread..MANY good suggestions here...some of which I have never heard of (Fito Olivares)..but...
Could I get a couple of posts about your favorite Cumbia artists? Just watched the movie Cumbia Callera (it is a little different but I liked it!) and
I am now hooked even more on cumbia..
Whoever brought up Fito Olivares...you hit a homerun! Jon

See, the problem here is that like Baja itself, there is a different "feel" that calls for a specific type of music... driving Mex 1, sitting on the
beach on the Pacific side, sitting on the beach on the SOC side, morning, mid-day, evening, at camp, at the hotel, in the cantina.... the list goes on
and on.
But just a few that fit the bill for me at various times and places:
The Reverend Horton Heat
Trio Los Panchos
UB40
Herb Alpert
Bob Marley
Ozomatli
Carlos Santana
Dave Matthews Band
Jack Johnson
subvert the dominant paradigm
"If you travel with a man, you must either fall out with him or make him your good friend."
JBL Noel
