Thanks Mike...
Even if it wasn't about you and my kid I would think it a beautiful story. Hard to believe that was 3yrs. ago.

July 26th.
We just kick back at camp today, lazy, lazy day. Nickie, Scott and I just hang out visit and swim with the kids. About 5pm they decide to pack up
and head out?! (not the time of day for a move) We say our goodbys and off they go, not having decided whether they will head south, north or stay
in town for the night.
27th. I start trying to get myself in "heading home " mode (this would take a couple more days, you have to sneak up on leaving) and, I have the
excuse that Doc. hasn't brought me any money yet. When I catch up with him a couple of days later and ask him he is surprized that Siliva hadn't done
that yet, I tell him that she had given me $100 (I'd "Pay Paled him $600) he laughs and tell me that they have put me on an allowence, I tell him "I
see, what you do, no money your campers can't leave", "That's it", Silvia comes over that evening and we settle up my "tab". I have no more excuses
and I have 2 kids that I've promised to have home for their birthday on Aug. 6th.

storylines and styles
Your words, Deb: "you have to sneak up on leaving"
There are so many ways to write. So many unique ways to entertain yourself in the creation of a collection of words that will become something that
will entertain others.
Your phrase, to me, alone, perhaps and no professional, really concentrates the energies that we must muster before departing Gecko for our other
worlds.
We all come from different places and backgrounds and somehow collect in the heat of summer or storms of winter in a place that is very special to us
where we can all share what we do have in common.
Leaving that place is having to recognize that we are on our own again until the next time we can collect there.
Sometimes I think about cleaver ways to construct sentences that cause words to ring and concepts just explode in heads as ideas. Sometimes I can
work too hard on a concept and lose the reader.
"you have to sneak up on leaving" is a simple, pure concept. Way to go.

Okay, I have to face it now....
I have a 1600 mile drive ahead of me and I have to do it, UGH!
I look around the cabin and make a mental plan on what goes where..okay, I've done that....
Hours later: I pick up a few things (put them next to where they need to be packed) I'll do it "tomorrow"
Tomorrow: Okay! serious now! Get your butt in gear Deb! "I WILL, I WILL!"
Okay, 'tomorrow" is here.....I get into serious packing mode, but, there is this pesky little kid from one of the camps that seems to want to argue
when I tell him that Brendan and Payton can't play (my family knows when I'm packing DON'T BUG ME! I finally put my foot down and tell him to go
"home" I feel bad because I probebly have hurt his 'feelers' but all of my "nice" hints haven't gotten through to him.
I get all packed up in a surprizenly short time (Doc. showed up again in the nick of time to help me with those heavy coolers to get on the roof-rack)
Everyone I know is gone from camp except Beach Bob who had come over the night before to say good-bye, so I don't spend the usual time (4hrs.) saying
good-bye to everyone, I'm out of camp by about 10am. I figure I can be to the border by about 6? 7? Not! still "sneaking up" on the leaving thing.
I decide I REALLY, REALLY need some Cielito Lildo crab for lunch.....Yeah, right! I pull in about 2PM....The kids are off running, "Hey, let's go to
the beach!"
We go to the beach for a couple of hours and head back to Cielito Lindo, where I run into Juanita.(just the excuse I need) Juanita and I visit for a
while and AWH heck, "Payton, Brendan, hows about we just stay here tonight?, Yeah, Mom!" (that is all I need!)
OKAY, I really have to make a move now....I do, almost.....
I make it as far as Rosarito (I HAVE to stop and see Keri) I have to back-track for several miles because I didn't know how to get to the 'old road'
doesn't matter though, I'm on a mission to get home??? Keri and I visit for a couple of hours while the kids invade her pool (Payton gets naked in
the parking lot to change clothes???, the FOO FOO GIRL?!!!!") Keri and I say our good-byes, I have to get these kids fed...onto Dave's New York
Deli! I finally find it only to find out that Dave closes at 4PM, it's 4:10pm, he feeds us anyway.....Thank you Dave!
Of course we have to stop at the second toll booth so Payton can feed the ground squirlls....that takes up an hour or so....
Okay, I've snuck up on this enough, or have I? No!......
I really like the new way to get to the border, (watch out though, stay in the right lane, no more U turn for San Diego)
Payton is distracting me so I really P-off the border agent.....I don't stay behind the green-light, "don't you know that is a red light?" (At least
I don't end up in secondary Mike!) He does ask me for our "papers" which of course are under the camping gear....but, not as buired as I'm sure he'd
hoped, Brendan grabs my purse......(I really think this guy wanted to mess with me).....We go to SD, to visit with Payton's Daddy (can't go by without
doing that) we spend 2 days...now I have 2days to get these kids home for their birthday (as I'd promised)....but......, I had promised to stop and
visit Mike H. and Maryann......(I'd planned for an hour or so.......) as I drop my purse, Mike tells me that we are going to visit Barsom at the beach
where he is camping (don't know why he wants to visit the guy that dropped his
boat motor in the Sea of Cortez) HAAAA! Just kidding! I'm all for a road trip where I'm not the driver.....and to the beach!......so much for the
driving on tonight! YES!
I hear Mike pull out to work just as I get out of bed, Dang, wanted to give him a hug good-bye. OH, well, I fear Mike will be in my life for a very,
VERY long time (I can give him a hug later)
I'm on a mission.....I have to get these kids home when promised.......6Aug is looming............
I decide to continue up 101, it's much nicer and I think I will surprize Paulina (David K. thinking he was helping ratted me out,......I already knew
the directions, Bo gave them to me,) Cody saw my rig and said "Mom, there is a car outside with "Camp Gecko" stickers on it"....then she saw
Brendan.....so it was a surprize for her......Of course she had to take him to the bay to catch fish......
We make it to Corning tonight (have to buy some olives...)
Home....it's the 5th.! Well almost,
South of Roseburg Or. is the Wildlife Safari (another excuse) Payton has never been there, so I say "Payton, would you like to go to an animal park
for your birthday present? "YES GRANMA!" so we blow another 4hrs. there...we got lucky, Brendan got to see and interaction with his favorite animal,
a cheeta, with anoying humans messing with her cubs.
After 15hrs. on the road (that day) I'm happy to say we made it home at 12:17, as we pull into town Brendan says "aren't you going to say Happy
Birthday to me, I say, actually it is a Happy Birthday to you, you were born at 12:14am on this day 11 yrs. ago"
Payton wasn't bore intil 5:53pm on Aug 6th. so I did keep my promise within 3mins.!~

This is a great thread...
Thanks for the details of your trip. If you don't take a journal along from now on, you'd better hope that Mary Ann and I don't catch up with you!
We're doing Gecko in October if you guys can make it.
