Talked with Sirena about an hour ago. She said Ron is scheduled for surgery this evening at 5:30.

Ron looks pretty damn good....

...especially in light of the way he's been described up until now. Bajabound2005 and I just got back from a visit with him. He is now in a private room (#102) and seems to be resting comfortably.

His face is a bit battered, but his sense of humor seems intact; when I said, "mira se muy feo," he laughed audibly. He is able to speak but only in a low whisper. I had to put my ear to his mouth to hear him, and what I heard was a guy who definitely has his marbles.

At the moment I'm writing this, he is hopefully being prepared for the operation to reset his jaw, barring any last-minute "misunderstandings" of the sort that caused yesterday's postponement.

As we were leaving, Sirenita & Son were arriving with the Bakersfield Bunch, who will be heading back home tonight. In my non medical opinion, what Ron seems to want most of all right now (aside from seeing his wife and seeing her well) is visitors. I'll be heading back again on Monday.

By the way, while del Carmen ain't no UCSD, it's clean, quiet and well-staffed. Given the circumstances, he is in excellent hands.

I wasn't able to read all 30 pages of this. Is he still in need of funds for his hospital bill? If not, is he in need of funds to pay the Mexican law enforcement to keep the 7 people who beat him in jail? I don't have much, but I can send $50 via paypal if that helps at all.

wooohooo....sirenita just called and said that they wheeled Ron into OR and he smiled at Izaak and waved at Sirena on his ride on the gurney...so he is PROBABLY....I aint sayin he is for sure....getting his jaw worked on...finally. Sirena is feeling so much better after seeing that grin of Ron's!

She also spent time with Cristina today who will be released very very soon and is doing terrific...she taped another message for her media naranja...her other half. This is all just great news so I will have a little GRITO de felizidad right now...we should all sleep a bit sounder tonight.

yeah Packoderm...every little bit helps for sure and they are gonna need it! Even though nomads are amazing for helping each other out...this is a special case...I cant say enough good things about ron & cristina...they deserve all the support we can muster and anyone who hasnt met them should go out of their way to do so...then you will know what we're talking about here and why we are so passionate about them.

VIVA RON & CRISTINA...VIVA!!!!! VIVA NOMADS.....VIVA!!!

We were wary of visiting, as we did not want Ron to feel as though he needed to be social with us, and since we have never met IRL. Perhaps this wasn't the best call, as you said he would like visitors. We may drop by manana, and see how he is progressing post surgery.
Continued prayers....

Why else would they be wheeling him into the OR?

Lionel...i think it is the perfect time for you to meet Ron...you and he have alot in common...hard to get a word in edgewise with both of you!!! sooooo you will keep him entertained I'm sure with no lack of words...ron's gonna be an ever better listener over the next while...definately go see him!

bajamigo...it's just that we have thought he was getting operated on for the last 3 days and they kept coming up with a raft of reasons(excuses) why it didnt happen...which is why I am being cynical.

To CHRISSIE HOFF...

PLEASE ACCEPT MY SINCERE APOLOGY!!

I want to publicly tell you and your family that I am ‘VERY SORRY’ for what I wrote the other day on the Baja Nomad board regarding the care of your Father and Cristina!

I should not have questioned or second-guessed your decisions on how their medical care should be handled. I’m sure you had valid and well thought out reasons for making them. Nor should I have publicly questioned your decision to return home. It was none of my business
to wonder why you did that, especially without any facts as to why.

In my defense, I hope you will understand that I, like all Baja Nomads, was very enraged about what had happened to your Dad and Cristina and was both frustrated and impassioned about what seemed to many to be questionable medical care in a reputedly questionable facility.

Again, please forgive me for questioning your choices and decisions!!

Like everyone here, I am so happy to read that they are improving every hour and day! Please know too that I continue to pray for their continuing recovery and healing and that all will work out and be fine with time!

Sincerely,
Amo Pescar / Miguelamo / Michael

The hospital has been putting off the operation for various reasons, one being they had to go to the states to get needed parts for the surgery.
Specifically, I don't know what those could be, but I'm sure there's a lot of hardware involved.

Hello Amigos... First off, I am very happy to hear of the progress of Ron and Cristina... I was very scared for them and a bit angry (like Amo Pescar) that Ron didn't get transfered to the VA or another U.S. hospital, fearing for his life.

Good news is good!

Today I recieved a couple of phone calls I want to share a bit of...

Antonio 'BajaCactus' called me from El Rosario at 2:30 this afternoon when he learned of this and that I was trying to reach him.

(I was on a job today, otherwise I would have posted sooner)

Antonio will do what ever he can to help. I asked if he had any direct contact with the governor (he doesn't) and suggested he read Baja Nomad to get the latest news, when he can.

Antonio apologized for being out-of-the-loop for so long... just a LOT of issues going on that keeps him focused on the Pemex and motel in El Rosario... and no time for casual Internet forum reading.

Another phone call from a personal friend and a Baja Nomad came today who has pledged to send $1,000 (dollars) tomorrow to help Ron. I suggested he do so through Carol at Discover Baja... or to read the latest posting here.

Way to go amigo!!!

Wow, like BajaGeoff I am now just returning from a small trip and can not believe what I am reading. I am in shock. I was actually just down Ron's way three weeks or so ago exploring the area.

I am praying for a full recovery and that those responsible are put away for a long time.

Ted

So, a couple of things. I'm hoping for better clarification....

Ron went in for the procedure on his jaw around 6pm - as noted by Shari. They were expecting a 3 hour procedure (that was the most recent estimate).

He was brought back out of the procedure sometime at or shortly after 7pm. Said he was too "hypertensive" making it difficult to work on him and complete the procedure. So, they've set his jaw better, but the procedure is not complete (but his mouth is shut with openings on the corners for liquid nourishment). Apparently he could leave tomorrow if he chose to do so (and receive a refund on the incomplete procedure), but it would be in his best interest to get the procedure completed. Sounds like they (the hospital/doctor) would like to see him stay another day or two to try again (and get his tension level down?).

Some of today's good news is that it was felt Cristina had recovered enough to give her the option of being discharged today or staying another night at the General Hospital. She did decide to stay the extra night.

Sounds like there could be a reunion of the two tomorrow. Depends on what the family decides. Cristina could potentially go stay with family in Tijuana, or find a way to stay in Ensenada closer to Ron. I'd imagine that would be decided tomorrow, or sometime soon.

-
Doug

FDT is staying in the hospital with Ron through the evening and into tomorrow. Sounds like there'll be others that have said they'll come and visit tomorrow as well.

I know you've gotten that info to me (and I've passed it directly to Christine), as well as Laura/angels4, and likely (?) FDT - so the offer is known about.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

I don't know where Christine plans to stay tomorrow and over the weekend, nor what the plan is for Cristina if she wants to stay in Ensenada after getting out of the hospital.

Thank you very much for your generous offer of a place for the family to stay at near the hospital.
