room is a "cat free zone"....
Homes were found for all the kittens. I believe all of them went to local (Mexico) homes. I worry that some of them will wind up like the hundreds of
other stray cats in the neighborhood.....dt

Seems to me that DK did little favor to Antonio by revealing that the bedspreads cannot be cleaned in town. So, where and when? Oh, sure, it's no
secret that virtually anywhere in the world, hotel bedspreads are to looked upon as foreign objects. But, again, where and when?

so i guess y'all gonna hate this....
we are smart enough to pull the bedspread off the bed where ever we may stay in a hotel. it's common knowledge that bedspreads hardly ever get washed.
they usually stand in the corner all night!!!!!

I thought everybody knew that Woody. I don't even put my luggage on the bed spread in a motel room. Seriously, the first thing I do when I get to the
room is fold back the bed spread and put it on the floor.
I try to be careful with the TV remote too for obvious (to me anyway) reasons.
It's the same no matter what country you're in or weather you're in a dump or at the Hilton, the bed spread is definately a "no fly zone"....dt

Did you really think that hotels (anywhere) wash the bed covers everyday, with the sheets and pillowcases? How about places that have little fresh
water for such things, like at Cataviņa or Bahia de los Angeles?
I am not here to do Antonio "any favors", as you say... I am hear reporting on my observations and other obvious details and facts about Baja. Yes,
Antonio is our friend and he does not deserve bad press from an unresponsible guest. However, Antonio would have happily helped that person and
probably covered his loss IF he had been informed.
Antonio has worked so hard and so well at creating a comfortable and safe 'oasis' for us travelers that faulting him for someone's suitcase being
robbed, one that was left out in the open, in their pickup truck bed, in the dirt lot next door to the motel, is close to being rediculous.
All you need to do is read all the other reviews on that web site to see the kind of establishment Baja Cactus is. Even that person who complained
about being robbed had nice things to say about his room there!

We once checked into a motel in Viscaino that was pretty marginal---------the beds looked suspicious, so we just brought in our sleeping bags and
rolled them out on top of the existing covers-------worked for us, but you have to be kinda sneaky so as not to offend the staff ( and leave early in
the morning, which we always do anyway).
Normally it is the bath that we are after and #1 priority, and the bed is secondary in consideration. (but nice if comfy and clean)
I don't really think that Antonio could do any better than he already does--------his establishment is exceptional, as is he.

Carry one of those small, hand-held blacklites with you. You can find scorpions in the dark as well as tracks in sheets which, if they could talk,
would give the "romping and frollicking" history of those rags since their last washing.
See? There's no end to the adventures that Baja offers.

Of course I realize the foul nature of hotel bedspreads. Just thought the very mention that they cannot even be cleaned in the town where the hotel is
helps drive home a point. And it's always fun to take a playful shot at DK.

Wow, and all this time they were telling me the "dirt" lot was theirs and for parking larger vehicles or trailers. I'll know better now (and so will
the irresponsible guests) because DK has stated it is so.

PS
I have met Antonio and like him as well as his Motel. I think his response to an unfortunate incident (true or untrue) was very positive. Most
people appreciate that kind of response from a responsible business man.
Too bad his unofficial spokesperson takes a more aggressive approach to the situation. he probably aught to stay out of hotel/motel management.

No "black light" Dennis---------------TMI for sure.

Is this kind of posting something you enjoy rts551?
The lot is Antonio's property... I never said it wasn't... But it is a dirt lot (was the last time I saw it) between Baja Cactus and Mama Espinoza's,
as I said. Would you leave valuables out in the open in a dark, dirt lot when it is so easy to bring them into your room or lock them in the cab?
I look for the good in Baja, but will report the bad when it could affect others. You reported the one bad comment out of dozens of good ones about
Antonio's motel as if that was so important to make a headline out of... then later on say how you like Baja Cactus too, yadda yadda...
Perhaps you should stay out of the 'posting here what you read somewhere else to get a reaction' business... and I will be more than happy to stay out
of the 'motel management' business... if that's what you think I do.
Instead of baiting for a bite here, try going fishing at Abreojos with Glenn or with Rich... they both know how to bait and catch!
Have a nice weekend rts551, and I shall do the same...

kind to us?
Maybe as long as the older/ commercial rooms are available... only those for dogs? One thing for sure... you can't please all the people, all the
time! |
This is very sage business advice that is bound to lose business for Baja Cactus if Antonio listens to you.
I would venture to guess that almost all of the nomads, and non nomads who surely lack all respect for the places they stay, only stay at Baja Cactus
for one night in transit on the way north or south.
As another hotel owner told me, she was not going to allow dogs, but she soon realized that MANY of the travelers, especially the part time residents
of Baja Sur, travel with their dogs---it was a business decision.
So if Antonio follows your advice, I know he will lose our business. When we are offered only old rooms or told no pets, we just move on.
Perhaps, we should ALL, including DK, give Antonio the right to decide for himself what is best for his business. I know, DK, it was just a
suggestion and I assume Antonio will be wise enough to not follow it. Or if he does, then losing that business is his choice.
And when others allow dogs and then complain about the extra cleaning, perhaps they should either not allow dogs, or not be in the rental business.
No one ever said the rental business was easy.

Yes, it was worth a headline thread, IMHO. If a parking lot is NOT safe, people should be aware of it.
It certainly does not say anything negative about the hotel, but serves as a notice to the owner that there is a problem, and a notice to others to be
more careful, there and other places even when the staff says a parking area is secure.
Thank you Ralph for letting everyone know.
Now, DK, I hope you have a good time driving all over the beach in Baja---

Didn't I read somewhere in this thread that Antonio says he has a camera focused on that lot. And, a "dirt lot"? Has something happened recently, or
isn't the main lot gravel? Big dif and inconsequential to the original issue.

I see. no the lot is rock. not dirt. And yes I posted the one bad thing.... just like you say you do.... and now you say I should not post...
Hmmmmm Glenn has been North for quite a while. Rich is south... but you wouldn't know that since your visits to baja are far and in between
compared to me.
My days are always nice. And my fishing is always good. ahh never mind.... I'll move on

Not going to comment on the interfighting of the boys on the playground....
But I hope the BajaCactus owner is still reading. We have not stayed there yet.
We have 2 big Labs (one's geriatric) and they are NOT bed-dogs. We are planning on traveling with at least 1 dog and knowing dog-friendly places is
great.
My sister-in-law has a yippie-dog terrier. I'm sure she lets her up on the bed.
But as far as the bedspreads go- We recently stayed at a place on the Washington coast that is dog-friendly. We wouldn't have stayed there if it
wasn't dog-friendly, we had noone to take care of the dogs, so they had to come with us. At the place we stayed in WA, I saw ALL of the linens being
washed. Bedspreads, and everything. I'm sure it's very difficult to get a large capacity commercial washing machine in Baja, but with all these
wonderful travelers on this board, perhaps something could be arranged for the owner to get a large capacity washer from the US (maybe even a segundo)
and have it transported down.
BTW- I've stayed in a place where I put all my luggage up on the glass table hoping it wouldn't get infested with 'roaches while I slept for a couple
hours. There were 'roaches in both sinks. I used bottled water to brush my teeth and seriously contemplated whether or not I could "hold it" all
night until I got someplace else in the morning. Thinking back, I should have just slept in the car and saved the $40US. (and this was a place in
Mexico run by a gringa).
The next day I went to a wonderful place and stayed for +3 weeks. (Villaggio Turistico in Comitan outside La Paz) Don't know if they're
dog-friendly, but they were definitely CLEAN!
I totally understand lodging managers setting aside some rooms for pets/no-pets. Some people really have the need for a no-pet environment. Others,
like our family, can deal with either one. I don't eat off the floor (and usually wear sandals), so as long as the linens are clean, I'll take either
type of room and appreciate the moderate price.

Wait a second. We all know bedspreads are gross because they don't get washed but the sheets & pillowcases do. What about that blanket???

I can see from this post that there are Dog lovers and Dog haters, well that is the way it goes, I have seen Dogs that are much cleaner than some
humans, I have a CHOC LAB that is 10 years old and has never had a flea or anything wrong, I would think most people traveling with their Dogs are
clean? of course you don't let your Dog on the bed etc. I will take my Dog where ever we go, and If they won't take my Dog then they don't get me
either, then that is the way it is, he is my Kid.
Thank you Antonio for taking my Dog and other Dogs, I will always respect your Hotel as well as others. My wife and I have stayed at your hotel, and
is the best value, rustic, friendly in Baja.
