It is difficult for me to understand why a publisher of Journalism is vilified for doing her job. Everyone, by now, is aware of the pitfalls of investing in Mexico. The deck is stacked against you in so many ways; ways that you may think you can anticipate, and then cover all your bases, but it is not a fair playing field.

I don't understand the mentality of some here who say that she was meddling in Mexico's affairs as a negative thing. Journalism is a risky occupation in Mexico. There are the few who take it on because it is the right thing to do.That was her job and that was her ethic.

Whatever you may think of the paper's format as a tabloid, its biases or its occasional hokey presentation, is irrelevant. It was a commercial endeavor. We are considering the accurate information it provided in this instance.

We, who entertain the idea of owning (such as it is) our own piece of real estate in an idyllic setting, for a price that could not be obtained in the United States, need to be informed. The Gringo Gazette provided that service, thank you.

Legally, she may indeed have been "meddling" in Mexico's affairs. Surely she was aware of that, being a lawyer. Surely she was aware of the risks in doing so, and she knew the players well. But there is a higher calling: exposing a fraud to the world. It arms you with more information when you are considering the ramifications of Caveat Emptor.

If you (a Non-National) resents the "meddling", then you are condoning the system of corruption. You can do that as a spectator looking to this board for your entertainment, but if you are trying to make a huge decision to invest, you are extremely vulnerable.

Whether or not she is Marjorie or Arrowhead, I don't know. If she is Marjorie, as a writer she has created a character, an alter-ego that can be outrageous and mess with you. (You are not required to enjoy her). If she is Arrowhead, she has created another alter-ego that presents herself rationally, and has a viewpoint as that of a lawyer.

The more I read about Nancy Conroy, the more I like her!

:lol::lol: That's right, David. I sit here at a huge console littered with buttons, each with a name on it. When I want someone to make a statement, I push their button.
Here...allow me to demonstrate by pushing the DK button:

"Hi there Nomads. I'm going to show you guys seven thousand photographs of a three mile dirt road in El Whatevero that we just love to drive back and forth on. It's a secret place so, I can't tell you where it is because it's...well...like I said, a secret. Besides, it's only for conservatives."

See, David? It's all me. Gotta go now. The pot needs stirring and it's my job to keep these Rosarito folks agitated.

For anyone who may be interested, Carrie Duncan, the founder and publisher of Gringo Gazette was deported several years ago for much of the same crusading journalism. She, however, worked things out with the authorities and is now allowed back. Her original paper appears to be flourishing, and methinks that it was more about keeping connected to the money that motivated her. That paper keeps a lighthearted tone. No more investigative journalism. I will not make any comparisons about the quality of the work, but it was quite clear that with Carrie's paper putting out 60+ pages per issue, it was a financial success. Nancy's edition never came close to that. Perhaps part of it was timing. Tourism exploded in South Baja. Not so much en El Norte.

It IS an advertising rag. Real Estate, restaurants, tourist services of all kinds. And Ms. Duncan has grown more and more parsimonious over the years. Noting that racks of the free paper are to be found all over the place from Cabo to Loreto, she also offered mail subscriptions for a price. Keep in mind that the paper is published in California and shipped to South Baja. The paper went online several years ago, and was available for free. Then, she started withholding the current edition, but allowing access to past editions. Today, you cannot access any edition without paying for it. So something that represents free bird cage liner for the entire state of BCS must be bought by those elsewhere.

Duncan now also has an internet TV program going on down there. Well, at least she did about a year ago, I haven't looked recently. She did some spots on local points of interest.

I much preferred the GG and it's look at the underbelly of the area over the feel good whitewash that is/was Mr. Torres publication.

Actually, just the opposite. It's only a few blocks off the main drag, but smack in the heart of the local's shopping district. I only referred to it as funky inasmuch as many tenderfoot tourists never even step a foot off the main drag.

The Defunct Gringo Gazette North

These comments come from my direct experience with Nancy Conroy and Carrie Duncan, but, keep in mind that they are from eight years ago.

I consulted for the Gringo Gazette North for a few months in 2001, building the advertising base and setting up a marketing plan.

The GG North was Nancy's baby, she had had the publishing software, logos and intellectual properties and for a time, shared the same graphic artist and printer that the GG South used.

Nancy had a verbal (at least) contract with Carrie that when she got it up and going, producing a sufficient revenue, Carrie Duncan relinquish all interests for some sort unspecified buy out.

Nancy was difficult to work with, only in the sense of if you told her something she didn't want to hear, she didn't hear it. Also, she was an American operating a business in Mexico without the proper permits and not paying taxes, the Carrie Duncan business model. Duncan once bragged to me that she took over a million dollars, tax free out of the country every year.

Nancy fancied herself a muckraker, and went severely off the deep end in her reporting. Whether she was accurate or not (she did source her claims), she angered some very powerful people, the Torres family and minions, the Corona family and minions, et al. She named names and, not surprisingly, received death threats.

Like her or loathe her, she cared and wrote passionately about the subjects that interested her.

Also, Conroy was not a racist. To quote from my recollection of a restaurant "review" written by Duncan it went something like this, "Why can't restaurant owners get Jose to the table faster?" and got worse from there on. Duncan was and presumably, still is, supremely contempous of the citizens of the country where she makes her money and the Americans who read her paper (also from my recollections, she referred to her readers as "Baseball-capped, mouth-breathing, beer swilling idiots." Another Duncan bit of wisdom, "Mexicans are so stupid about business, they don't know anything. I tell them I print fifteen thousand papers and they believe me. They don't ask me about distribution or readership, if they get a few coupons, they are happy."

Having met Duncan a couple of times, and knowing something about her background, I will say that she can be salty. Not around her enough to know if it was humor or something else. Her partner down South, David Flores is a Mexican citizen. when I say partner, I don't know if he has ever had a financial stake in GG, and I know he was the one doing much of the work. However, as for the nightclub and hotel, he is her partner.
