Last Updated: 9/6/2016, 8:00:00 AM (PDT)

Newton's satellite appearance has begun to deteriorate. The cyclone's cloud pattern is characterized by a ragged eye, which has been filling, and breaks in the western eyewall. The center of Newton is expected to traverse the rugged terrain of Baja California sur today, and its interaction with land should result in steady weakening. After the center emerges in the Gulf of California late this afternoon or evening, it is not expected to spend much time over water before making a second landfall in northwestern Mexico early Wednesday. With an increase in southwesterly shear forecast around that time, either a steady intensity or slow weakening is likely prior to the second landfall. Once Newton moves inland over northwestern Mexico, the low- to mid-level centers are likely to separate when the circulation passes over the Sierra Madre Occidental, and rapid weakening is forecast. Newton continues to be a large tropical cyclone, and hazards extend well away from the center. These hazards will affect a large portion of Baja California sur and northwestern Mexico during the next day or so. Moisture associated the remnants of Newton are likely to cause heavy rains and localized flash flooding over parts of Arizona and New Mexico Wednesday and Thursday.

Wind and rain gone now it's almost nice other than the overcast. Barometer steady. Wind at 5mph only .14" of rain in my gauge that isn't very accurate.

Just got off the phone with my neighbor in San Jose, near Costa Azul area, I was able to contact her by calling her dedicated landline.
She said power went off around 9pm last night, serious wind, damages seem to be mainly trees and gardens, standard big mess.
Power just went back on for her around 9:15am this morning, sat tv working, but no internet for her at least, I have also been unable to contact anybody else who just use cel phones, text and what's app no luck either yet, airport still showing no power.

10am San Jose time the Internet just came back online for some.

Looks like the eye is over Rob and Baja Linda's (Rancho La Aguja)?
Just minutes later that site shows the eye over Mission San Luis Gonzaga (20 mi. southeast of Constitucion)!

From our friend in Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo;

"We're good just a ton of leaves, branches and debris in the yard. The winds were strong and sustained but nothing like Odile, plus they were outside and not in the house! The neighborhood looks a mess but windows are in tack and the cars are all fine... Scary but it will all come back together quickly."

Just got the internet back on and we have connection to the world. Still windy but no rain. Lotsa trash all over - just like last time. The Sea of Cortez is very restless - re-arranged our beach for us.
All is good - time for lunch.

We lost our internet and cell service around midnight last night. It came back on around ten this morning. A light rain started around 5:00am and been raining off and on all day, hard at times. The wind has been steady as well....gusts up to 55mph. At noon Calle Juarez, Calle Salveteria were flooded, the Palapa Restaurant has about ten inches of water it, the waves are coming over the sidewalk on the malecon. Some unfortunate sailor left his sailboat out in front of the harbor a few weeks ago....it's now on the beach wedged between a couple of palapas next to Chili Willies and being salvaged by the locals; I'm sure the 30' mast will be gone in a few hours; that aluminium is worth some $$'s. All in all things aren't too bad. It looks like around five or six thing might start picking up around here....literally. The wind has gotten stronger while I have been writing this......Suerte,CJ

Power just came back on here (3PM). We think we have almost seen the end of Newton. We had a nice break late morning for a couple of hours when the eye probably went right over us. Wind from the west now with light rain. That was quite a storm though - not quite Odile, but quite strong. Those north of us (Lopez Mateos, San Juanico) I'd guess you've got a few more hours of this. Stay safe everyone.

looks like 40 to 50 knot sustained winds with 70 to 80 knot gusts from the south and east are coming your way.
