That picture of Conchita's son in the pina colada delivery truck looks like it was taken in front of my house. Do you come down to the South Campos much? Rob

Ken/Lera/and all.

Well this silly post on CONSTIBUCTORS has seen a wonderful ride up to this point and it has revealed some unexpected as well as hoped for results.

Ken Bondy quite correctly and gently pointed out the fact that when I start writing almost anything I get carried away with my thoughts and am somewhat careless with where my fingers rest on the keyboard.

Quoted by my cyberfriend Ken

Bernie I hope you realize that my post was in jest and just for fun, albeit somewhat at your expense. Nothing personal, you know I consider you a good cyberfriend. Plus I have read both of your books several times
++Ken++

[Edited on 5-24-2005 by Ken Bondy]

Ken this is one of the most precious things I enjoy about this board and that is that the majority of us sorta believe in that thing I wrote a few years ago?BAJA IS ABOUT FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS?and it don?t matter nothin? how you spell the word the meaning is ALL in the thought

Ken thank you for the kind and friendly thought!

I had hoped to accomplish a few other things with this fildubbed post and some of this was displayed by the posts by several of those folks someone dubbed lurkers.
Pleased to say I saw a bunch of new names and a few of those I had not seen for a while.

Quote zforbes (could this be a relative of the guy that publishes that great magazine) I have enjoyed reading all the good information from the knowledgeable folks on board, and I'm using suggestions to put together my next visit, I think to La Paz or Loreto. I must say that I was quite relieved to finally hear from the women on the board, because at first when I tuned in, it seemed Very Male. Now that stuff goes to off topic (which I also read, but only in small doses)and the info and pictures are easier to access.Thank you to the poets, writers and artists among us for your lovely gifts.

Really nice words for all of us and a great reminder that at least a few people listen and hear what we attempt to convey on this board (Thanks for allowing this Doug?he is the nice guy who runs this place)

And another?by my fren, Kin Bundy?
OK I confess. I spelled "friend" wrong in my last post and, unlike Bernie, chickened out and corrected it!
++Ken++

One of the areas I had hoped to see did not materialize to the degree that I had hopped and that was the Ladies (no I do not use the word loosely) of Baja. They did not respond as I had hoped. Perhaps, as one indicated, the word turned her off. Anyway I believe that the lack of female participation on this board is not reflective of their contributions in the PARADISE OF BAJA.

I know that I am trying your collective attention spans but please bear (ha?another word) with me. This is a quote from my first book (okay Bruce the name is Mi Baja No Hurry No Worry) ?From the very first time I visited Baja I have had an image that seemed to just flirt at the edges of my conscious mind????.I would look over and see a carload of females heading south??They started coming before the advent of the Toll Road and they have never stopped. They seem to follow that road as though drawn by a Mexican Pied Piper. No they are not all young and they surely were not all ?vamps???Mostly they were a more seasoned bunch of people, but none of them acted as if they were anyone?s grandmas. They were women and they seemed to know exactly what they were looking to find.?

Enough of this I really enjoyed the posts arrows and kisses alike---no that just ain?t true. Every normal person enjoys to nice things in life and I AM THE NORMAL NOMAD.

One last thing?Mike OdelL?HAPPY BIRTHDAY?suggest some of that Mexican soup (the name of wich exkapes me)

PS. I pushed the Preview Button and every work is typed as it was intended!

Rob....!!!!! Are you one of the VERY lucky cats that live in Dreamland? I had no idea that San Felipe offered such a great beach head and campos such as your's! I had talked to the guy in the first house with the off little house-gargage next to it....seeking data about whats for sale there. I was prepared to buy on the spot. I have enclosed a picture of the house we were stealing the t.v. from :lol: We are going back there in the first part of July to snoop around. Do you know if there are any rentals there we can use for a week or two?

wait, is this still an age-o-meter?

cause if it's is, I'm 32 in December. First trip was age 11, hauled to Quatros Casas (via Cabras) in the RV of my best friend's dad, himself a Baja vet of 30 years. Remember being shocked at how cold the water was and scolded for eating the last of the Pop Tarts. Subsequent trip was one year later, with an older friend. Uncertain of where to camp after surfing Popotla, we opted for a hotel just south of Rosarito on the libre (still there - east side of road near all the ceramic shops). The following morning we left our stuff in the room(duh) and went for a surf at Calafia, returning to find the maid had stuffed our every last possession into her cart, claiming she was going to "clean it." That marked the last time I've stayed in a hotel anywhere in Baja.

Still go down whenever work allows...my friends and I have posited, perhaps out of desperation, that "our 40's will be our best Baja days." Would appreciate confirmation of this theory.

The first picture includes our house about half way down. It has a Canadian flag out front and is 2 houses south of the one with the Hobi Cat in front. The second picture is of Harry and Ernie's house. Unfortunately, there are no rentals available. If you want to stay in this area, there is excellent camping @ Nuevo Mazatlan, 2km south of us. You can check it out on David's site. BTW, when did you take the pictures?
Bert and Adrienne finally made it out here for our last New Years party.
It was Lynn Flock that you spoke with. I just towed him here from KM9 with a blown head gasket. I think he's been here for more than 25 years. Rob

Oh alright guys!

I started going to Baja when I was 6 yrs old. We went to Estero Beach, not much there back then, and made it a permanent summer home.My grandparents were the first of the family to go there, back before I was born.:O I got married and had my first child in Ensenada at the ripe old age of sixteen!She is living in Baja full time now and has been for several years, as some of you know.I visit her for months at a time, every year.We still go to Estero Beach for our annual family re-unions every summer, and my hubby works in Ensenada often for a US based company.Baja will always be in my blood, along with the rest of my family.In fact we are planning our retirement in the next few years down there! I'll be 54 yrs in a couple of weeks and proud of it!!Great topic Bernie and some pretty funny replies:lol::lol: Saludos Nomads, Sally

Cool thread.... it's fun to get to know a bit more about you crazy baja dudes and dudettes. Myself, I'm 41 and started like so many others... with mom and dad way back when to TJ and Ensenada. Of late (last 20 years or so) it's been surf trips up and down the coast. And although I'll never get tired of surfing, I now want to do some other exploring as well. One of these days I'll climb Picacho del Diablo. (Was going to be this season, but no time to get away! Story of my life.)
See you in the Baja.

Back in the early seventies I was initiated at Hoosong's Cantina...the Mexican at the door reminded me of Barney Fife with his ancient 22 revolver..I wonder if he kept a single round in his top pocket like Barney did?

I totally agree that more women should be posting because they have contributed a ton toward the late history of Baja.

Did you know that women from Enseneda would catch a sailing schooner to make the trip up to San Diego, stayed at a cottage on Pt. Loma that rented rooms and went shopping in Old Town and then returned home by sea. Why! It was much more comfortable and shorter than the buckboard ride over the trails to San Diego. Way back in the mid 1800's and up until about 1890's
